Important elections will soon take
place all across this nation. And the
crucial question is how many of you
adults who listen to this program are
going to vote.
I know. You're still nursing that silly
notion that your one vote doesn't
matter. Or maybe you have two white
candidates for the Senate or the House
and you still figure one white guy is
like another.
It was that kind of dumb thinking
that gave the presidency to Richard
Nixon in 1968. That bit of unthinking
irresponsibility cost black Americans
dearly and it threw this whole nation
into crisis.
What you may not realize is that
although Nixon no longer is President,
‘Black Prospecties” Written by Carl T.
his influence lingers on - and will be
felt throughout the lifetime of a lot of
people who listen to this program.
Richard Nixon appointed more men
and women to federal judgeships than
any other president. Nixon named 220
judges to the federal bench, including
four of the nine members of the
Supreme Court. These are people
appointed for life who will enforce the
laws and interpret the Constitution as
it applies to you and me.
Thus the quality of justice in
America for as far ahead as you can
see will be determined largely by men
chosen by the first president in our
history to leave office tarred with
scandal.
Everybody understands the impor-
Rowan Sponsored by The Chrysler
tance of these judgeships. What you
may not be aware of is that Nixon
appointees now dominate 12 federal
regulatory agencies that make crucial
decisions and rulings affecting the
daily lives of just about every
American.
On the day he resigned, Richard
Nixon had named every single
member of eight of these important
regulatory groups. 1 refer to the Civil
Aeronautics Board, which controls
your plane fares; the Federal
Communications Commission, which
controls the TV and radio stations; the
Federal Power Commission, which
decides how high your light bill is; the
National Labor Relations Board, which
influences the well-being of your
Corporation
union, the Securities and Exchange
Commission, which is supposed to
protect Americans from stock
manipulators; the Consumer Product
Safety Commission, which is supposed
to prevent you from being ripped off
by unscrupulous businessmen.
The Nixon people who control these
agencies don't go out with Nixon. They
are appointed for terms expiring in
1978, 1979 -- and in the case of the
Federal Reserve Board, as late as
1988.
If'you had it to do all over again in
that 1868 race between Nixon and
Hubert Humphrey, would you still say
that your vote didn't matter? Would
you still say that one white candidate is
just like another?
