Dear Mrs. K.:
I have collected butterflies since I was a boy. I want
to know what is the name of the largest butterfly and
what size is it? - Mr. T. Howard
Dear Mr. Howard:
The Swallowtails are the largest of our butterflies.
They are from 3.0 - 5.4 inches.
Dear Mrs. K.:
Does the walkingstick change colors?
Kofi A.
Dear Kofi:
The walkingstick changes in color from green to
brown as it grows older. In the spring and early
summer, the walkingstick is green to camouflage it as it
rests on green leaves and new limb growth. In the fall
the walkingstick turns a brownish-gray to match the
color of brown trees.
Dear Mrs. K:
What is the other name for the May Apple? What
does its fruit taste like? My son says they are good to
eat. - Mrs. Paulette B.
Dear Mrs. Paulette B:
The wild flower, the May Apple is called the
Mandrake by some people (Its scientific name is
Podophyllum peltatum). Its small lemon like fruit tastes
somewhat like a cantaloupe.
Dear Mrs. K:
How did the praying mantis get its name? Is is really
mean? -Barbara R.’
Dear Barbara:
The praying mantis got its name because it holds its
forelegs as though in prayer. The mantis eats other
insects. When it assumes its prayerful position, it is
ready to strike and kill. It is perfectly harmless to
people.
Dear Mrs. K:
My brother and I went to Grandfather Mountain last
summer. We want to know how old is Grandfather
Mountain. Does it really have gold? - James and John
J.
Dear James and John:
Grandfather Mountain is one billion years old. Gold
has been located in four mile-high places on the slopes
of the mountain.
Dear Mrs. K:
Do mammals lay eggs? It seems like one of my
teachers said so. -Ezra R.
Dear Ezra:
The only mammal in the world that lays eggs is the
Platypus.
Greensboro -“For the rest
of your life you will spend
more time at work than you
■will at any other single
activity.”
Mrs. Mae Nash urged
that first year college
students take their career
planning more seriously.
Calling it, “The First Step
Toward Lifestyle Plan
ning,” the Director of the
Co-operative Education
Program explained to the
Bennett College students
that they must assess their
wants and needs in order to
enable them to make wise
decisions and sound career
plans.
“You will explore your
interests, aptitudes, and
other personal traits; as
sess your self-awareness
and self-esteem; study a
wide range of occupational
opportunities; and devise a
plan for integrating these
into your own persona!
career development pro
cess.”
She was addressing the
first session of Bennett’s
second semester orienta
tion program for freshman,
which is under the auspices
of the Freshman Studies
Program.
Mrs. Nash stated that
black women are still being
sought to fill job openings
due to the passage of the
Equal Opportunity Act of
1972 and the Affirmative
Action Programs growing
out of that legislation. She
told the young women that
the United State Career
market is characterized by
a distinctive pattern of male
and female professions.
“There have been rela
tively few women in such
traditionally male profes
sions as medicine, den
tistry, law, the ministry,
engineering, the natural
sciences, business and
economics.
Special note was made of
data on career choices of
entering freshman women
between 1966 and 1972. It
shows that there have been
increasings in the percen
tage of women aspiring to
enter traditionally male
careers. Black freshmen
women tend to break from
the conventional career
aspirations substantially
more than white female
freshmen.
“Young black women are
apparently aware of the
affirmative action programs
that appear to be creating a
particularly faborable job
market for black female
college graduates in posi
tions formerly closed to
them.”
Mrs. Nash who is
primarily concerned with
placing Bennett students
on job assignments during
their college studies, war-
warned students of the
problems they will have to
face.
“Yyou will still have to
knock twice as many doors
to find one that opens. You
will have to work twice as
hard as your white
counter-parts. You will still
be looked upon with a
certain amount of disdain
by some Black men.”
She added that today’s
black women will be far less
tolerant of being window
dressing in “Big Business
showcases.”
You will demand jobs
with substance and mean
ing; scoff at promises of
non-existent job opportuni
ties from black and white
employers. Low salaries,
poor fringe benefits, open-
ended jobs with fancy titles
will not suffice the
sophisticated Black woman
of the future.”
Mrs. Nash informed the
students that they must
know where they want to
go-
“You are in a sense a
business unit. Your talent,
skills and abilities are your
products. You must devel
op them so that they
command the highest
possible price.”
According to statistics
compiled from the United
States Department of
Labor/Bureau of Labor
statistics, the decade be
tween 1970-1980 broadcasts
many changes in the job
market. It states that there
is an over-supply of
teachers in most areas,
except those areas treating
the disadvantaged or read
ing area; there is a need for
dieticians, but fewer home
economists; management
and business personnel
with emphasis in account
ing, computer, personnel
and management; and
there is a great need for
health personnel,

Dr. Uche concludes that the

He must also adopt a more
