WE»ESDAY, MARCH 12, 1975 ttc: 'ibibunal aid PAGE 5 ‘IN OUR TIME” bv Rev. R.M. White pMtNUEL! Shaw Sponsor Pastor's Conference The Fourth in a Series on the Ten Commandments. EXODUS 20:8 - “REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY, TO KEEP IT HOLY.” “It was never in my heart, To play so ill a part- But evil is wrought for Want of thought, As well as for want of heart.” This verse of poetry as well as our text, is a call to remember. It is in recognition of our proneness to forget. In our lives we are contantly bewailing the fact, “Oh, I forgot!” Now, we know that scientifically we never forget anything. But practically we almost, always forget everything. Over and over again, we hear friends say, “I forgot!” We are often prone to forget because the remembrance of certain things is annoying. So we just stop thinking about them. We refuse flatly to even look in their direction. Until, bit by bit, we soon forget them entirely. You see how it’s done! We forget - not out of malice -- but out of quiet omission. So it would appear that no harm was really done in these instances, wouldn’t it? Can you discern, in your own mind, what great effect forgetting has on growth? Why, with so much forgetting, the mind is liable to wither away due to inactivity, atrophy. Our text, “REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY”, is a direct call to remembrance. The fact is there is nothing, however trivial or important, that we do not tend to forget. We forget our responsibilities and our obligations. We forget the vows we’ve made -- to our God, to our partners in marriage. We forget each others name and faces. We forget our friends. Sometimes, thank God, we forget our enemies. Being so forgetful, it is not at all surprising that many forget the sabbath day. Some forget it on purpose. They feel that it stands in their way. That it is a “cost instead of a “priviledge”. A barrier that contains them - rather than opens the glorious door of freedom. Freedom to enjoy God in the light of thanksgiving, fellowshipping and communing with others who feel the real spirit of this God-ordained day, sabbath day. For many this day is hectic because they are in pursuit of gold or of pleasure. But be what it may, this day is forgotten by so many! Therefore, we need this urgent call of the commandment -- “REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY, TO KEEP IT HOLY” - wholly for remembrap^ce of God’s gift to man. The sabbath was given not for the benefit of God, but for the benefit of ourselves. It is a vital day in the wheel of human need. We are to think of our Christian sabbath as a gift -- not a positive command of God. A day set apart under the spiritual leadership of the Christian church. We realize, of course, that our sabbath is not the same day as observed by the Jews. They observe the seventh day of the week; while we observe the first. Now, this point has been in controversy between religious sects for many, many years. The early Christians began to worship on the first day of the week because our Lord and Savior rose on the first day of the week. By and by, this day became a day of rest, a legal holiday. This took place in the year 321. Now, if there are those who wish to argue the validity of this day, let them. That is their right. I, personally, feel that our God would be pleased if, through our sincerity, we simply revered him to the end of all our personal hopes, dreams and aspirations. Our individual lives should reflect our tiue convictions as they relate to what we honestly and sincerely believe - especially about our God.
