J WEraESDAY, APRIL 9, 1975 THE TRIBUNAL AID outreach Human Resources in Action in North Carolina by Pat Williamson Bennett To Hold Summer Program children come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Most are mentally and physically healthy. Others are not so fortunate. The Child Advocacy Section of the Office for Children of the Department of Human Resources is interested in finding solu tions to the problems of these children regardless of whether they are physical ly, intellectually, emotio nally, or culturally diffe rent; abused, neglected or excluded; rich or poor. Marian Durham, a coun selor with the Child Advocacy Section, said, “We are available to help children with all types of problems. If we cannot help the child, we know where to direct him for the services he needs.” There are four regional directors (Black Mountain, Greensboro, Fayetteville and Greenville) and 20 field staff consultants available to help children with problems. Each county in North Carolina is assigned to a field consultant. According to Mrs. Dur ham, the Child Advocacy Section and its field staff consultants have handled more than 250 cases since December 1974. One case invovled a child who needed a special cream for a skin ailment. The child's family could not afford to pay for the cream. "We tried unsuccessfully to locate an agency which w'ould pay for the cream," Those Times You Suffer Acid Indigestion, Painful Stomach Gas ...this is ‘Gasid Indigestion.' Take C(1-GEL for Fast Relief. Dl-GEL® gives more com plete relief because it does what plain antacids can't. It reduces excess acid. Also con tains Simethicone to get rid of gas, too. Heartburn, gas, bloat ing go fast. Get DI-GEL. stated Mrs. Durham. "Fi nally, we called the manufacturers of the cream and they agreed to provide the child with an indefinite supply," she said. Another case involved a county school system w hich was trying to find transpor tation for an ^emotionally disturbed hcild to a special classroom in another town within the couny. The Child Advocacy Section located a volunteer who was willing to transport the child to and from school. Mrs. Durham stated that the Child Advocacy Section also depends on the Department of Human Resources Information and Referral System. Anyone needing help in solving a child's problem can call the Information and Referral System’s toll free number 1-800-662-7030. If the problem cannot be referred to a specific agency or organization at that time, it will be referred to the Child Advocacy Section. The problem will .then be handled by the Child Advocacy Section or a field consultant working in the area where the child lives. "Even though we handle many cases, we know that there are many children in North Carolina who need help." stated Mrs. Dur ham. “We want these people to know we arc available for consultation or assistance," she conclud ed. klD YOU BUY YOUR FOOD GREENSBORO - Ben nett College will hold its 17th summer training institute for high ability secondary school students.
