But this same Book does not count Jacob as having bought his brother's birthright. It rather counts him as having stolen it. But he was never arrested. He stole within the law. What is wrong with stealing? Of course, it is all but useless to ask that question. We recognize the fact that it works at least a twofold injury. It works injury to others. This is the case whether one steals a man's money, or steals other values that are intangible. We recognize the wrong of stealing especially when we are the victims. When Jacob robbed Esau, it would seem that he did the job without a pang. In fact, 1 think he looked upon the transaction as quite shrewd and brilliant. But when a bit later he himself was robbed by Laban, he was outraged. “Thou hast beguiled me,” he said in amazed indignation. He thought of himself as a pitiful innocent that had been tragically wronged. We cannot steal from others, in any fashion, without hurting the one from whom we steal. But the greatest injury that is done by the thief is to himself. His victim may suffer, but often his suffering is comparatively very slight. We may steal from the government, for instance, without causing the nation to totter. Surely, many have tried this out. We may beat our way on the bus with the smug conviction that the price of the ride will matter very little to so strong a corporation. In this we shall be in a sense entirely right. A big corporation can get alone quite well without the payment of your fare. But it is equally true that you and I cannot get on quite well without being honest. ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr.
