Churches, civic groups and
others are finding out that the
operation of successful non
profit housing units is more
than a notion, an official of
the U. S. Department of
Housing and Urban Develop-
ment said in Greensboro,

not been as successful as the
sponsors envisioned,” said

Q. I got married last Decem
ber. Can my wife and I file a
joint return for 1974?
A. Yes, if you are married
on the last day of your tax
year, the IRS considers you as
married for the entire year. So,
you can file a joint return with
your wife for 1974, but neither
of you can be claimed as a
dependent on the return of
another taxpayer.
Q. I rent out some land to
a farmer nearby. Should I in
clude the rent payments I re
ceive as farm or rental income?
A. Report the rent payments
you receive on your land as
rental income on Schedule
and attach it to your Form
1040 when you file. Unless you
materially participate in the
business of farming, the rents
you receive are not considered
farm income.
Q. My wife and I are filing
separate returns. Can I itemize

deduction?

administration changes caused the application for funds
to be submitted one month past the deadline.
Now that the summer is almost over and children will
soon be returning to school, A&T has been notified that
approximately $130,000 in unused funds are now avail
able for the lunches. To this experience some people would
say, “Well, it’s better late than never.” To this experience
the wrriter would say, “It’s better never late!” We can ill-
afford to neglect our children at the expense of adminis
trative inefficiency.

Last week Ben Collins held a noon news conference
to announce his candidacy for one of the eight city council
seats for the City of High Point. He is the first person thus
far who has openly declared himself a candidate.
Collins is a Democrat and resides in the second ward.
He once served on the local police force and is now assis
tant manager of the Big V Supermarket.
Collins was accompanied at the news conference by his
wife and tv/o daughters. He was also supported by Wayne
King and Harold C. Davis who, along with Collins, have
raised many questions about the administration of the lo
cal government.
Ralph J. (Bud) Davis has announced his intentions to
resign the post of director of physical activities at the
Salvation Army Boys Club, effective September 1. He has
accepted a position with Continental Oil Co. offcireensboro.
Bud cites a personality conflict within the organization
as his reason for leaving. Whatever the reason, High Pointers
will -'“ally miss him.

According to assistant to the city manager Jim Penning
ton, if all goes well the City of High Point will be in the
bus business in about two months.
The city proposes to purchase the real estate and equip
ment of Consolidated Bus Lines, Inc. and contract the op
eration to a private management firm. This will be made
possible through a $1,139,108 grant from the Urban Mass
Transportation Administration, U.S. Dept, of Transporta
tion.
It is hoped that the present bus routes will be expanded
and new buses will be purchased.

The High Point Theater and Exhibition Center will have
the grand opening of the theater complex October 7, fea
turing Dave Brubeck and his sons. There will also be other
national and international artists and entertainers perform
ing at the center during the year. Let us support the High
Point Theater and Exhibition Center because our support
will determine the kind and the quality of performers we
can bring to the City of High Point.
