SMITH- Coach Eddie McGirt’s Gold en Bulls finished the 1974 campaign with a 4 — 2 league mark and a 4—7 overall. Smith lost a lot of close games last year, which McGirt attributed to his defensive secondary who “were too small defens ively”. Another problem he added was the inability of the offense to jell. With the mediocre season over, the Golden Bulls are looking ahead. Young men expected to star for J.C. Smith this year are James Wideman, senior quarterback; and run ning backs Jeffe Butts and Calvin Adams. George Hill, 6-3, 245-lb. guard; made the All-GIAA team last year. WINSTON-SALEM S'lATE—Coach Qeo Wallace must find a replacement for the departed Bennie Barbour. Barbour, a 6-3, 245-pound guard; made the All-CIAA team three years in a row and was a pillar of stone for the Rams’ defense. Sophomore quarterback Bernard Smith is being count ed on to lead the Rams offen sive ly. Sophomore center Robert Weeks will lead the offensive front. On defense, veteran Curt Richardson, a fearless line backer, will lead the Rams. VIRGINIA STATE- Talk to Coach J. D. Marshall and it doesn’t take long before he starts moaning over the fact that he’ll have to find a replacement for mighty Joe Pearson, rugged 6—2 All-CIAA tackle. Of course this is only one of the problems facing the likeable Marshall as he starts his second season at Virginia State. He smiles when the names of Charles Burton and Ken Sales, two defensive giants, are mentioned and he adds a double smile when he speaks of running threats, Charles McDonald and Guy Rose. Quarterback Gary Stephens appears to have the number one spot, as of now, and will get a strong challenge from Russ Seaton and Tom Wil liams. Split end Larry Gallo way should have a fine seas on. VIRGINIA UNION STATE—Virginia Union lost a host of lettermen and the Panthers will be hard pushed to match a two year mark of 17 wins and three losses. Gone are the likes of running backs Larry Roberts and Lofell Wil liams; defensive stalwarts, Mike Jones, Anthony Leon ard, and Damon Dreher. Coach Williard Bailey says that the Panthers cannot be counted out as Quarterback Timothy Keeles, and All- CIAA offensive tackle Don- Leon Byrd return to lead the offense. Bailey feels that he has an excellent defensive nucleus in Anthony Leonard, and James Porter, comerbacks; Frank McCray, strong safety, Larry Williford, defensive tackle- end; and Calvin Young line backer. Sophomores Walter Brown, tackle; Bernard Johnson, cen- Register Now/ iiiLi ter; and Leon Phillips, half back, should help. ELIZABETH CITY STATE—Coach Tom Cald well has been building for two years and things are looking up for the Vikings. Rising sophomore quarter back Charlie Hardesty showed the league his class by leading the conference in total offense with a 114.2 game average. Hardesty completed 82-passes in 201 attempts for 914 yards. All-CIAA halfback Jerome Newsome was the Vikings rushing leader with 709-yards in 154 carries and he returns to bolster the offensive fire works.
