When Frank Cowan talks about locomotives, the tech nical terms float easily through his detailed sentences as he explains such things as fuel injection systems, main bearing problems, and the engine types. “A lot of people would never guess it, but most of our locomotives operate on systems that are 90 percent electrical,” he explained. “Each train carries three or four locomotives - three large ones or four small ones. Our largest engine is 3,600 horsepower and our smallest is 600 horsepower.” Frank further explained that engines are classified as GP (general purpose) or SD (spec ial duty). Engine classiflca- tion allows for matching locomotives with speciflc jobs , great,” he said. Goads). Train locomotives run con stantly because, as pointed out by Frank, “it’s better for them. When you shut them down completely and allow the engine to cool, it can cause leaks and other prob lems.” Each of Southern’s locomotives is brought in for a complete overhaul every four years. Southern’s oldest engines that are running now date back to the 1950’s. As general foreman, Frank super vises the crews that work on . the big engines. It is serious and, to the layman, very complex work. Innovations in diesel en gines for locomotives are toeing made constantly. Al though Southern buys some of its locomotives from the General Motors Locomotive Division, some of the innov- . ations take place at Southern’s Helps Shrink Swelling Of Hemorrhoidal Tissues cauaed by inflammation t>octor» have found a ipedica- tion that in many caae* five* prompt, temporary relief from Frank lives in Chattanooga with his wife, Christine, and their two children. Southern Railway | has made Frank Cowan believer and he doesn’t mind saying so. “Southern has solid reputation built on good service to all its customers; leading the way in railroading innovations,” he said. To keep up with changes and improvements in the mechanics of locomotives, Frank participates in refresh er courses from time to time set up by the company that makes the locomotives. “It’s a constant learning process," he confesses, “but that makes my work interesting and even more rewarding.” Although he intended to stay in aircraft mechanics, Frank has never | regretted changing from jet engines to diesel locomotives. “I got involved with the work | here (with Southern) and the opportunities for blacks are Steel Belted Sears STEEL BEtT RADIAL PhY Sears Highway Passenger Tire Warranty Full Warranty for 10% of Mileage Specified If you do not receive 10% of miles specified because of your tire becoming unserviceable due to failure apparently relating to the material or workmanship, normal road hazards or tread wearout, replacement or refund will be made, upon return, with no charge for mileage received EA01AL PLY Limited Warranty If you do not receive the total miles specified because of your tire becoming unserviceable due to failure apparently relating to the material or workmanship, normal road hazards or tread wearout: we will exchange it upon return for a new tire or give you a refund charging in either case, only the proportion of the then current selling price plus Federal Excise Tax that represents mileage used Nail punctures will be repaired at no charge.
