A dream that I can feel the inner emotions of daily activity --a dream I can touch and see? I can visualize in this dream An elevated happiness and then, a pain that no physical injury can touch. An inner torturing pain that only mortals can give. An eating away or erosion of one’s soul. Slowly....slowly Like a cancer, until there’s no more me. The funds are being made available by the Office of University Research of the U.S. Department of Transpor tation. According to Arthur Saltzman, director of the institute, the A&T re searchers will help to evaluate a $9.65 million demonstration program which was recently autho rized under the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1973. That project will initiate pilot transportation pro grams in 45 locations across the United States, includ ing one in North Carolina. “The transportation pro blems in rural areas are much more severe than in the urban areas,” said Saltzman. “This is contrary to what many persons believe. If a person in a rural area doesn’t have his own public transportation, many times he finds himself in a real bind, because he can’t usually walk like persons in the city can." Saltzman said the A&T researchers will visit at least four of the experi mental sites, including one in Cherokee, to ascertain how well the systems are Increase Continued from Page 1 $114.5 million. Q. The county V¥idened the street where I live, and everyone on the street was assessed for the costs. Can I get any deduction for ''“Tl this? A. No. Any assessment for local , ^ benefits such as streets, side walks, sewers, etc., which usually increases the value of your prop erty, Is not deductible as taxes. In stead, you add the assessment to the cost basis of your property. If you later sell the house, this addi tion to the basis may reduce the gain on your property, and subse quently reduce the taxes you pay on the gain from the sale. Q. I am divorced and have cus tody of my six year oM son. I help support him, but my former hus band also makes child support payments. Which of us Is entitled to the dependency deduction for the child? A. Generally, the parent who has custody of the child for the greater part of the year is entitled to the dependency exemption, but there are exceptions. Your husband may get the ex emption if the divorce decrw specifies that he is entitled to it, and if he provided at least $600 of the annual child support. Also, he may get the exemption if he provided $1,200 or more in child support, and you cannot clearly establish that you provided more. Q. I work in a factory and have the choice of receiving free meals at the company cafeteria or re ceiving a cash allowance for them. Would I have to indude the cash in my Income? A. Yes. Any cash allowance from your employer for meals must be included in your income. Meals your employer furnishes free are usually not income if they are fur nished on the business premises, and if they are furnished for your employer's benefit. However, if you have a choice of accepting either the free meals or a cash al lowance, and choose the meals, you must include their value In your income. Q. I had a car accident and my automobile insurance will pay for this medical care of everyone in jured in my car. Can f deduct the medical insurance portion of my auto insurance as a medical ex pense? A No. Since the medical insur ance covers anyone in your car, not just your spouse and depend ents, it is not deductible as a medi cal expense. Continued on Page 5 CROSSWORD The model systems will include a variety of types including fixed routes, as well as systems using volunteer transportation and friends and neighbors’ concepts. Both Mrs. Johnson and McKelvey have previously conducted rural transpor tation studies in various regions of the state. In 1975 unrestricted grants totaling $1,250,000 will be made to other private colleges and uni versities throughout the nation. From The IRS Greensboro-Lower in come workers who are eligible for a special payment of up to $400 from the Internal Revenue Ser vice will not receive their check unless they file an income tax return, Mr. Robert A. LeBaube, Dis trict Director for North Carolina, pointed out to day. Some workers entitled to the payment wouldn’t ordinarily be required to ^ file a tax return, because their earnings are so low, he said. However, the payment, called the “Earned Income Credit,” can only be made to qualified taxpayers who file an income tax return, LeBaube explained. To qualify for the credit, individuals must have under $8,000 in total income from all sources, which include wages, salary, tips, or other employee compensation. Additionally, the workers must have paid more than half the cost of maintaining a home in the United States for themselves and at least one dependent child for the entire year. The dependent child must be under 19 years of age or a full-time student, he said. The Director said that people who qualify who earned $4,000 or less would receive a credit of ten percent of their earned income up to a maximum of $400. Those whose total income from all sources was between $4,000 and $8,000 would receive a reduced credit. rpbrxps t\ess WATa-STIKS protKt your lAVMtmint tn WATER-STIKS OFFER M- A S7S Mnii H«y IMnMTOWN.
