WHAT IS YOUR
QUESTION
Dying-Death-Estate Planning
A. J. WOLFE
Dear Mr. Wolfe:
What do caskets cost? I mean, generally, not the real
fancy, plush jobs. I just attended a funeral and the
casket was like the one I picked, but she didn’t pay as
much as I did, I think I got “taken*'
(L.&L.)
Dear L.&L.:
There is a price for every pocket-book, starting
usually around $200 to $400. What you consider a
“general” type can vary from what another family
considers “general”. As far as price is concerned to be
sure that you are comparing the same thing. Funeral
homes use different pricing methods. Frequently, the
price of the casket is the price of the entire funeral
(excluding cemetery expenses). Some, however, will
itimize. As an example, one would quote a price of
$800.00 for a casket and list services for $500.00, a total
of $1300.00. Another would quote $1300.00, which
includes all the extras. The total cost of the funeral
service would be the same in both cases. Also, in
comparing cost you want to keep in mind the type of
service and the quality that is provided, because that is
figured into the cost as well.
Dear Mr. Wolfe:
It is hard to believe, but a cemetery has lost my
husband’s body. I want to move my husband from
cemetery to cemetery, because
I have purchased a family plot there. They say they
can’t locate where my husband is buried. What can I
do?
(Sad and Looking)
Dear Sad and Looking:
I’d be sad too. First, if it were me I’d see a lawyer
promptly and also send a formal complaint to the burial
commissioner for the state, whose office is in Raleigh.
What legal ground you have would depend upon what
kind of cemetery, what kind of contract you signed, or if
you made these arrangements thru a funeral director.
Someone should have a record of this information, and
a deed should have been prepared for you. If the
funeral director made these arrangements for you, he
may have the information. At least, he should be able to
be of assistance. Most reputable cemeteries keep
accurate and permanent records, and by probing the
files the location of your husband should be found. You
can probe the ground also, and then by process of
elimination (from office records) get your husband’s
location. If they cannot produce information on the
burials^ they have, then your lavyyer would certainly
have sound grouncis foVfega? proceedings. As'you said,
it is hard to believe. To me, it would be like a hospital
nursery loosing a newborn baby...and you know what
would happen then.
Let me know what the outcome is.
Dear Mr. Wolfe:
Is it customary for funeral directors to charge you for
transporting a body from the funeral home to the
church for the service and then to the cemetery? My
uncle said that was an automatic part of their service.
(Marlene J.)
Dear Marlene:
Usually this service is figured into the price of the
funeral. However, if there is a great distance involved,
then there would be an extra charge. It costs money to
drive those large fancy family cars and coach. As an
example, if a man died in a Veteran’s hospital in a
distance city there could be an extra charge to pick up
the body. The same applies if the distance to the church
is out of the immediate area. If the location of the
cemetery is very far (usually 30 to 50 miles) away, there
will be an extra charge...but these charges should be
known ahead of time.

home. Then came May 10th
and the hijacking of the
cargo ship Mayaguez. The
Coral Sea was immediately
ordered to turn around and
head for the Gulf of
Thailand. Once on station,
off the coast of Cambodia,
squadrons on board the
Coral Sea conducted air
defense operations. HC-l’s
job was to carry out search
and rescue missions.
“It was 10 days of around
the clock work,” recalls
Rivers, “and I saw things I
had never seen before.” “I
had seen lots of helos land
on our deck but not all shot
up with wounded people in
them.”
Pearl became quiet for a
moment, as though he were
envisioning the event
again. His job while on this
operation was to dliect
helicopters on and off the
carrier and position them
on the flight deck so as not
to interfere with other take
offs and landings. How
ever, this was not his only
job. Pearl was also part the
team that makes sure the
helicopters are mechani
cally sound and ready for
the next mission.
“I felt like I was really
doing something,” he said,
“I came to the realization
that people’s lives were at
stake and I was part of the
effort making sure they
were safe.”
Once the crew of the
Mayaguez was rescued and
the mission completed the
Coral Sea once again
headed for Australia. This
was fine with Pearl because
he didn’t join the Navy just
to work on helicopters. He
also wanted to meet and
communicate with other
people. His exposure to
people of different cultures
was limited before coming
in the Navy but with just
one cruise to the Far East
he met and talked with
people from Singapore, the
Philippines, and Australia.

ABOUT
NATURE

Dear Mrs. K:
Is the Giant Condor a big bird?
Cheryl
Dear Cheryl:
The Giant Condor or vulture is the largest soaring
land bird in North America. Its wing span is nine feet.

Dear Mrs. K:
Does the zebra fish live longer than the Goldfish? I
am planning to put an aquarium in my office and want
to use fish which have about the same life span.
Mr. Gains
Dear Mr. Gains:
The life span of the zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) is
three years. The Goldfish will probably outlive the
zebra fish because its life span is from seven to eight
years.
***
Dear Mrs. K:
I read that Bloodhounds are gentle. If this is so, then
why do we read in history books that Bloodhounds
chewed up runaway slaves?
Miss Lee
Dear Miss Lee:
Bloodhounds are gentle, good-tempered and loving
animals. A true Bloodhound would never harm any
creature, including man. It will only trace down a man
with its remarkable sense of smell. The dogs that were
reported to have chewed up slaves were probably
mongrels.

Dear Mrs. K:
Can a zebra baby walk when he is born?
Alan
Dear'Alan:
A baby zebra is able to get to his feet in about five
minutes after it is born and can follow its mother within
an hour.
Dear Mrs. K: ***
How many days does the mother guinea pig carry the
baby before it is born? I am planning to mate mine.
Evelyn
Dear Evelyn:
It takes 67 or 68 days for the baby guinea pig to
develop before it is ready to be born. It is born with its
eyes open and has a coat of fine fur.
