Under Washington, the number grows to 200. At his death, the President provides for their manu mission. Washington’s rec ord shows a concern for their physical welfare, but affords little proof of equal concern for their mental or moral betterment. 1754 Philadelphia Quaker John Woolman publishes “Some Consi derations on the Keeping of Negroes”, an exhortation to fellow members of the Society of Friends to consider manumitting their slaves on grounds of morality. Three years later, some Quakers take formal action against members who ignore this plea and continue to own slaves. In Philadelphia, Quakers deal ing in the slave trade are barred from making contri butions for financial up keep. In New England, Quakers who import slaves are similarly penalized; in London, the suggestion is made that they be expelled from the Society. 1760 New York City Jupiter Hammon, be lieved to be the first Negro poet in the colonies, publishes “Salvation by Christ With Penitenital Cries”. OraFix holds dentures better because it spreads better. Tests prove OraFix* spreads better than the other leading denture adhesives — cream or plastic. Other adhesives can leave gaps between dentures and gums. So food particles and air can get in causing dentures to slip. But OraFix spreads better so it can fill 6ven tiny gaps. Result? OraFix seals and holds dentures tight. ORAFIX, EVERYDAY, FOR THE SEAL OF CONFIDENCE.» WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7.1976 WHAT IS YOUR QUESTION Dying-Death-Estate Planning A. J. WOLFE DEAR MR. WOLFE: Is it OK to spread ashes in the backyard someone who has been cremated? (S. Johnson) from DEAR S. JOHNSON: In N.C. you can spread •'cremains" in your backvard or flower garden etc. Some states have laws preventing the scattering of ashes but at present N.C. doesn't. Undoubtedly, if everyone that was cremated was scattered then we soon would have a situation that would demand a control. Normally, the ashes are placed in an urn, which can be placed in a niche in a Columbarium. If earth burial is preferred the urn may be buried within a cemetery. The urn may be kept at home as well. Some families have the urn kept at the funeral home until the second person dies and then the urn of ashes of the first person is placed in the casket of the second at the time of burial. If a person selects to be cremated it is advisable to also select the disposition of ashes, thus eliminating a burdensome decision on the survivors, such as the one in the letter that follows. DEAR MR. WOLFE; 1 just buried my grandmother and in going thru her belongings 1 found a jar that contains ashes of her first husband (my real grandfather, even though 1 never knew him). What in the world should 1 do with them. 1 don’t want to take them home but 1 don’t want to be disrespectful either. (Ira & Jan Simpson) DEAR IRA & JAN SIMPSON: • Since these ashes have been kept evidently for many years by your grandmother they were obviously important to her. I would suggest that you contact the cemetery where she was buried and see if they would permit the jar (hopefully you mean a sealed urn) to be buried at the foot of her grave. This is simple and involves only a shovel of dirt. Had you known beforehand you could have made arrangements for the urn to be placed in her casket before a final closing. As stated above, you can buy a niche in a Columbarium at a Mausoleum or you can also buy a separate cemetery space and have it buried. With foresight your grandmother would have realized that even though the ashes were important to her that they would not be to others and would become a problem to the survivors. So, as 1 stated in the above, if a person selects to be cremated it is best to decide also on what is to be done with the ashes, and this should be agreeable to the survivors. DEAR MR. WOLFE: I am trying to get my husband’s veteran benefits but I don’t have his discharge papers. I filed for a duplicate, but they tell me that I have have the branch of service and the dates before they can issue me one. My In-laws are mad at me and won’t give me any information. What can I do? I need the money bad. (G.M.) DEAR G.M.: It is true that you can get a duplicate discharge paper, but you do have to let them at least know what branch of service so they can start tracing it. I would suggest that you contact his last employer and ask that his personnel file be checked. This is confidential information and employers have to be careful how this information is distributed but they should at least be able to tell you what branch of service he was in and what dates. This is usually on the application form that one fills out when applying for employment. Good Luck. What is your question? Direct it to: A.J.
