Was it always so dry? Allen P. Dear Allen: Although the Sahara in Northern Africa consists mostly of large dunes of sand and sandy wastes where nothing can live, people do live in the oases where animals and vegetables abound. Eight thousand years ago the Sahara was a fertile region with flowing rivers, grass valleys, fish and animals. The Sahara began drying up about 2000 B.C. Dear Mrs. K: What color was- the first man who evolved and where did he evolve? Mr. Edwards Dear Mr. Edwards: Evidence shows that man first evolved in Africa, which is called the cradle of mankind, around seven million years ago. While the color of the first man cannot be known from a study of his bones, it is believed that his skin color was black because of his origin in Africa, a hot continent. Dear Mrs. K: I read somewhere that the largest bird weighed over five hundred pounds. Is this so? Mrs. Erby Dear Mrs. Erby: The elephant birds (Aepyornis) of Madagascar which is now extinct weighed around 1000 pounds. Its thick egg shell could hold two gallons of water. However, another large extinct bird was the moas (Dinornis) of New Zealand. It stood 12 ‘‘eet tall and weighed about 500 pounds. The ostrich is the largest living bird today. It stands around eight feet and weighs around 300 pounds. *** Dear Mrs. K: What are pit vipers and where are they located? M. Barbour Dear Barbour: Pit vipers (subfamily Crotalinae) are snakes which have deep pits on each side of their heads between the eyes and nostrils. They include rattlesnakes, moccasins, copperheads, the fe-de-lance, the palm vipers and bush masters. Most of the species can be found in America. However, some live in Asia. If you are planning on catching pit vipers, you should learn to handle them safely first. They are poisonous! Dear Mrs. K: Do momma lions and their babies have the same color fur? Anita Dear Anita: Grownup Hons’ coats are solidly tawny. The babies of lions have mottled coats with spots. Their tails have dark circling rings. *** Dear Mrs. K: How often do snakes shed their skins? Ms. Ridley Dear Ms. Ridley: Snakes shed their skins whenever it is outworn. This may occur one to six months from the time their old skins peal off. There are so many things to learn about Nature. People want answers but sometimes are afraid to ask. Well, don’t be. DURHAM -North Caro lina A&T, the defending tournament and visitation champions in the Mid- Eastern Athletic Confe rence, has lived up to its pre-season billing as the team to beat in the seven-team conference af ter the first month of the 1975-76 season. The Aggies of Coach Warren Reynolds were picked to finish atop the league this season and after the first month of the season the Gate City quintet stands all along at the top of the standings. As the teams prepare to head into the final two months of the season, A&T has a 3-0 conference record and a perfect 8-0 slate overall. The next outing for the Aggies will be January 8th against UNCKCharlotte in Charlotte. The last action for A&T was in the Aggie Holiday Classic when A&T defeated North Carolina Central and Jackson State to gain the championship. Morgan State and South Carolina State have not played a conference game to date but both teams have made impressive showings against outside competi tion. South Carolina State returns to action January 10th against Sanford Uni versity in Birmingham, Alabama. The Bulldogs are 6-1 on the season having won six straight games before bowing to Dillard in the finals of the Tallahassee Invitational December 20 in the last outing for S.C. State. Morgan plays at Norfolk State January 6 in the next game for the Bears. Maryland-Eastern Shore returns to action January 5th against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Hawks are 1-1 in league play and 2-4 overall. Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated York College for third place in the Shaw Classic December 20th. Delaware State has a 2-6 overll mark and a 1-2 MEAC record. The hornets travel to Lincoln Universitv. Pa. to meet Lincoln January 9th in the next game for the Hornets. Delaware State dropped a 116-82 decision to Kent State December 19th in the last game for the Dover, Delaware quintet. ' Though it may sound as if Marion Harris devotes all his waking hours to A&H Cleaners, that is not the cas by the long shot. He is also involved with other parties in a Plasterwooti Products business developing plas- terwood moulding. “It is the only Black firm in the business,” stated Mr. Harris. His other activities in clude being a member of the North Carolina Board of tahe Department of Trans portation of which he is the only Black member. He was appointed by Governor Holshouser to the Board on Aug'Ust 8, 1974. Just recently Mr. Harris ment from the Governor in being selected to a new six-member Office of Min ority Business Enterprise Advisory Board. The Harris family con sists of five members. Marion Rex Harris, his wife, Aronul of Wayne County and their three daughters, Amy, Angel- ique and Anjenette. Mrs. Harris is a member of the A&H team as she works to aid her husband with running the business. The story of Marion Rex Harris should provide inspiration for us all. Because of his skill, will, courage, and luck, he has become one of the most respected men in Fayette ville and in North Carolina. If you are in Fayetteville, stop by and get to know him. You will be glad you did. the Kiw'anis Classic along with Morgan State and dropped a 74-66 decision to Drexel in the first round. Against Randolph-Macon in the consolation contest, Howard was on the short end of a 71-63 score. The Bison are 0-1 in conference play and 2-7 overall. Howard plays Hampton at home January 12th in its next outing. North Carolina Central carried a 2-5 overall record into the Holiday Festival Tournament in Winston- Salem January 2 & 3. The Eagles were matched against Winston Salem State in the first round Friday. In conference play North Carolina Central is 1-2. The next game for the Eagles will be January 14 at home against St. Augus tine's. DURHAM - Morgan State’s center Eric Evans Tuesday was named Player of the Week in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Con ference for his play last week. Evans, a 6-9, sophomore from Clinton, N.C., scored 27 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked five shots in Morgan’s 68-65 win over the University of Baltimore last Tuesday.
