annual awards banquet of
the Durham Business and
Professional Chain.
The Durham Business
and Professional Chain is
an affiliate of the National
Business League.
A Washington, D.C.
native, Burrell attended the
district’s public schools and
Howard University. He is a
veteran of World War II
and the Korean conflict.
The National Business
League was founded in
1900 by Booker T.
Washington. It is recog
nized as the nation’s
foremost national advocate
of minority business enter
prise and economic devel
opment. There are 120 local
chartered chapters in
thirty-seven states and the
District of Columbia; along
with 40 affiliate business
trade and professional
organizations.
Burrell has been active in
many civic, educational,
religious and philanthropic
endeavors. Some of these
include services as presi
dent of the Booker T.
Washington Foundation,
Washington, D.C.; Chair
man of the Board of
Regents, Daniel Hale
Williams University, Chi
cago, Illinois; guest lectur
er at several well known
universities; and chairman
of Parish Council, St.
Mary’s Episcopal Church,
Washington, D.C. His
publications include co
authorship of “Getting It
Together: Black Business
men in America" and
currently he is author of a
