McNeill, whose own institution has moved from predominately black to 80 percent white, said black institutions "must continue to be vigilant to the needs of society and be in a position to alter traditional ways of operating." Performance is the note we have to focus on now, he concluded, "Attempting to elicit sympathy because one is black, or because his institution is black is old hat. Productivity is the thing now." In his remarks to 1.000 persons in Moore Gym, Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, chancellor of A&T said: "Some are debating as to whether or not blacks should celebrate the bicentennial, but 1 say. who will remind Americans of this great stake that blacks had in the building of this great nation if we don't? We must stop talking so much about identity and difference in the nation, and talk more about our similarities." "1 will personally take every opportunity to show that my people made a great contribution to life in America," said Dowdy, "We have the same desires and goals as any other people have," added Dowdy, “and that is the pursuit of happiness." Am I eligible to get a grave plot in a nearby National Cemetery? I have heard there is a National Cemetery here in High Point or nearby. Is that true? If there is not a National Cemetery in High Point or nearby, what is the address of the nearest one? J.M. DEAR J.M.: In most cases a veteran who has an honorable discharge is entitled by law to burial in a military cemetery, or as we call them National cemeteries. From your information I see no reason why you would not be eligible. The National cemeteries still open for burial in N.C. are in New Bern, Raleigh, Salisbury, and Wilmington. At this writing I do not know what space they have left, but I do know that National cemeteries are fast filling up. A recent survey showed that there is space for only one of every 20 eligible veterans. Of 117 federally owned cemeteries only 61 still have space available. In fact, there are 21 states without active cemeteries now. Veteran's families are finding that when death occurs often there are not active National cemeteries nearby, and of course the family would bear all transportation costs to ship elsewhere. Because the National cemeteries are filling up, congress passed a law in August of 1973 saying that there would be an "additional allowance not exceeding $150.00 for incurred expenses of interment or burial plot..." when burial was not made in a National cemetery. Even if there should be an active Nat’l cemetery close to you now, there is no guarantee there will be space when you need it in the future...since these are used on a first come first serve basis. For those who like statistics: In 1975 there were 37,000 burials in National Cemeteries, This is expected to reach 54,000 in 1978. Over the years there have been more than 1,300,000 burials in these federally operated cemeteries. There is today 1 in 4 eligible to be buried in a Nat'l cemetery, which is about 50,000,000 people...but there are fewer than 2,500,000 unused burial sites, ***** What is your question? Mrs. Young said the interest in multi-cultural library offerings is being accelerated by the increas ed numbers of foreign students now attending colleges in the . United States. "We have more than 130 of these students attending A&T," she siad. “The problem is that, instead of simply expecting them to adopt our culture, we need to provide library services which can identify with their own needs." Mrs. Young said one ultimate goal of the conference might be the promotion of an interna tional network of library cooperation among emerg ing nations. Participants in the June conference will include Mrs. Rose Fernadder, of the ministry of education and culture of the Baha- nias; Mrs. Vivian Huett of the Carnegie Endowment the United Nations; and Che Fan of Duke Univer sity.
