WHAT AM I?
1 'm a hollow vessel not made of wood,
And I/am shaped much like a hat.
1 am made of metal Which'is unjer^too^
While my tongue swing^’ like a bat.
Schools and churches have often used mt
While a rope on my head was tied.
He who searches into history can see
That my fame is spread quite wide.
WHAT AM I?
My kind have been known for many years
As famiUar objects to the pubhc.
If I find a reason for certain fears
I sound a warning to kindgom subjects.
Crack-pot is not what I happen to be;
Especially if the crack is wide.
Its my lot to remind those who feel free
That celebrating can split your side.
WHAT AM I?
I am silent now but I once made sound
As my tongue slapped on my wall.
Some wonder how a historic place is found
for me in fame's great hall.
If once again 1 could move and sway,
I wouldn' t be satisfied
Until every man is free as the day
With justice to all apphed.

STATES\ ILLE—Sponta
neously when a person is
being ..sked, or has been
as ed how well do you
know yourself? The
immediate reply is, I don't
know me better than I, or
possibly I certainly know
my own mind.
Little do people fully
realize that circumstances
as well as acquaintances
under a given moment have
more direct bearings on a
persons concepts and moti
vations.
Unfortunately, tradition
coupled with a persons
individual ego has a
tendency of portraying a
very vivid, however, false
illusion 01 ones party.
If this was not the cause
in evidence, there definite
ly would not be exceptions
to each and every social
rule and guideline, espe
cially, since society is
supposedly the basis upon
which democracy was
founded.
Laws, rules and guide

STATESVILLE—The Rural Housing
Rehabilitation Program sponsored by I
CARE, Inc. is cooperation with the
Farmers Home Adminstration, has been
operating in Iredell County since June 1,
1975. The first program year ended May
31,1976.
A grant of $20,000 was received from
the Low Income Housing Development
Corporation of N.C. for the purpose of
repairing and rehabilitating homes of low
income home owners.
Loans up to $5,000 with interest rates
as low as one percent can be obtained for
repairs through this program. To be
eligible for a Farmers Home Administra
tion loan the homeowner must occupy the
house which is in need of repairs; reside
outside a one-mile perimeter of the city of
Statesville; have recent satisfactory credit
history; have enough money coming in
each month, including welfare payments,
to repay the loan.
Additionally those homeowners resid
ing inside the perimeter of Statesville
who can provide materials can be served
through this program.
All labor on these jobs are provided at
no cost to the participant.
During the program year from June 1,
1975 to May 31, 1976 forty-nine homes
were completed. Presently we have been
funded for another year beginning
June 1, 1976 to May 31, 1977.
In this program year the minimum cost
for materials on homes that we repair will
be $170. Labor w'ill still be provided free
to eligible homeowners,
I Care, Inc. Rehabilitation Staff has
gained a lot of experience and know-how
in the area of home repairs through the
operation of this program. We feet that
we can promote better service delivery in
the coming year to eligible homeowners
of Iredell County.
We have three carpenters and four
helpers employed to provide Ihe labor to
eligible participants.
Homeowners interested in the program
may contact Fred Nelson, housing co
ordinator, or Martha Turner, housing
aide, (704) 872-8141, 1 Care, Inc., 502 S
Center St., Statesville, NC 28677.
STATESVILLE—Regard
less as to where we should
be or as to our immediate
position in life; there creeps
or has crept within every
normal persons life, the
image of the actuality of a
child.
Just a mere child, not
one ol color, creed, origin
or parenthood, but just a
happy innocent infant de
pending unknowingly on
anyone individual, but just
as a blessing to the world.
Unfortunately, when we
hear of drives for the un
fortunate such as Heart
Fund, Marathons, etc. we
are usually in complete
sympathy and are willing to
do our share or., possibly
more, depending on the
immediate situation at
hand.
But as suddenly as death
itself strikes, we find when
one of our very own has
been strickened or one that
v\e have had direct contact
with, we become humble
and completely helpless in
this horrible and unbeliev
able position.
Such is the tragic case of
little two year old Master
Anthony Jerome Stamp, Jr.
who v.as residing before his
illness wilh his grand
parents, Mr. & Mrs John
Stamp at 610 Monroe Street
in Statesville, North
Carolina,
Little Anthony has been
hospitalized nearly seven
weeks, strickened with a
very rare, possibly fatal
kidney disease (Nephrotic
Syndrome).
Having been treated at
Iredell i\lemorial Hospital
for approximately three
weeks with constant con-
sulations with Baptist
Ho pital of Winston-Salem,
Jerome was transferred for
further treatment and ob
servation, where he is pre
sently still listed as a criti
cal patient.
II was reported that
Jerome, Jr. was the second
such crucial case in Baptist
Hospital History. The first.
the eldest, a 15 year old girl
that was able to substain
aduit dosages, was able to
survive, however, little
Anthony being an infant
was forced to take child
dosages of which has been
to no avail.
His medications has been
changed three times with
the present drug if taken
over twice will definitely
leave him sterile, but may
have further complications.
Should this remedy not
work, a special kidney
machine will be the next
alternative, at a very ex
pensive rate, adding to the
$150.00 per day room and
board bill presently in
existence.
The last and final alter
native should these others
fail, is a kidney trans
plant, which could prove
fatal even if a donor was
available.
An urgent appeal is
being initiated by the
