lina this century.
In a speech to the
Dunn Rotarty Club
Tuesday, August 3,
Winters said that even as
a first-term senator, he
was appointed by Hunt
to some of the most
important committees of
the Senate. "This gave
me an opportunity to
structure and sponsor
some meaningful legisla
tion," Winters told his
audience.
"Many of us are quali
fied to make contribu
tions, but the door has to
be opened to us first,"
Winters said. "Some
times you are able to
open them yourself, but,
most often, they are
opened by others. Jim
Hunt opened doors for
me in the Senate."
Senator Alexander
said he was impressed
with Hunt's concern
with people problems of
the State of North
Carolina, and that in
cludes black people,
white people, poor, rich,
whatever."
Alexander said Hunt
had the ability, training
and knowledge of state
government to best get
the job done. "He really
knows how to make
things happen," Alex
ander said. "I've seen
him exert strong leader
ship in many ways
during my term in the
Senate."
Alexander also point
ed out that Hunt was the
first gubernatorial candi
date to have a special
staff member working
with minority affairs. Dr.
John Larkins, former
director of the state's
Youth Development
Division, is serving in
that capacity with the
campaign. Larkins said
he had known Hunt for
many years and knew
first-hand of Hunt's
dedication in seeing that
all citizens of the state
have equal opportunity
in all aspects of life.
"1 am especially pleas
ed that John Larkins is
taking this leadership
role in my campaign.
Hunt said. "He knows
first-hand the problems
of minority employment
in state government and
I rely heavily on his
advice."
Larkins said, "Jim
Hunt is fully award of the
necessity of expanding
employment horizons in
state government for
minorities and women,
and 1 know this will be a
top priority in his
administration."
Working with Dr.
Larkins on Hunt's cam
paign staff is John W.
Edwards, Jr. of Durham
who has worked with the
Voter Education Project
and other voter registra
tion drives.
Lt. Gov. Hunt has
