Graves-Dodd Nuptials Solemnized
In Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel

Chapel, Bennett College, was
the setting for the candlelight
marriage of Miss Janie M.
Graves and Allen A. Dodd on
Sunday, December 27, at 5:00

Given in marriage by her
uncle, James A. Graves, the
bride wore a long chantilly lace
gown designed with a scooped
neckline, a fitted bodice com
plemented by a very bouffant
skirt, and long sleeves ending in
points over the hands.
Her fingertip illusion veil was
attached to a halo of lace and
tulle sprinkled with sequins and
pearls. She carried white roses
on a white prayer book.
Miss Claudette Graves, Wom
an's College sophomore and
cousin of the bride, was maid
of honor. She wore a slim white
embossed taffeta dress with a
green net overskirt, matching
headdress and carried a white
cascade of carnations.
The bridesmaids were Miss
Ethel Graves, Yanceyville, Miss
Vera Vincent, New York, Mrs.
Luvenia Chavis and Miss Peggy
Neal of Greensboro. They wore
dresses of green embossed taf
feta with white net overskirts
identical in style to that of the
honor attendant's with matching
headpieces and slippers. -Their
bouquets were . composed of
white carnations with greeil rib
bon streamers.
The ? bride's niece, Debora
Davis, was flower girl. She wore
a white embroidered organdy
dress with a green cumberband.
Mr. Chester Dodd, cousin of
the groom, was best man. Ushers
were Bill Mock, James Vincent,
Norman Little, and Charles
Chambers all of Greensboro.
The grandmother of the bride
wore a beige dress with match
ing accessories and a carnation
corsage.
A reception was held im
mediately following the cere
mony at the residence of the
bride. Hostesses were Misses
Claudia Warren, Lillian Russell,
and Claudine Graves. The new
lyweds left for Harrisburg, Pa.,
immediately following the re
ception.
The new Mrs. Dodd is a grad
uate of Bennett College, Greens
boro, N. C., and is presently
working there as secretary in
the Thomas F. Holgate Library.
She will join her husbantfc, per
manently in June. He is a form

Memorial Services For Dr. David
D. Jones Held At Bennett College
Dr. David D. Jones, who head
ed Bennett College from 1926
until 1955, was described Sun
day as "a man who had faith in
God and who believed that man's
relation to the Eternal is per
sonal."
The occasion was the annual
service of remembrance and the
speaker was Bishop G. Bromley
Oxnam, head of the Washington
Area of the Methodist Church,
who was a close friend of the
late educator and his family.
Referring to Dr. Jones as one
of the "distinguished leaders of
American education," Bishop

Six Persons Escape
Death In Fire
Tragedy
Early Thursday morning, the
Greensboro fire department en
route to a fire at 2208 Pear St.
by way of E. Market St. "ancf1
Cottage Grove Avenue detected
another fire on the corner of
E. Market and Durham Streets.
Six persons asleep in the house
and unaware of the fire were
saved by the careful observance
of Deputy Chief Clumpier and
other members of the fire de
partment.
The residents of the house are
Mrs. Annie Campbell, age 52;
her sons, Javis, age 24, John, age
23, Fred, age 22 and Otis, age
17; one daughter, Miss Evelyn
Campbell, age 20. These people
are left homeless at this writing
The fire was reported to have
started in the kitchen of the
house.
A&T CHOIR & DANCE
GROUP SCORE IN
"EVENING WITH
SPIRITUALS"
The A&T College Choir and
Modern Dance Group scored in
their presentation of an "Even
ing With Spirituals" at the Har
rison Auditorium last Sunday
afternoon.
The dancers, directed by Mrs.
Cynthia Shivers, interpreted
two spirituals, "Couldn't Hear
Nobody Pray" and "Nobody
Knows the Trouble I've Seen"
as the choir rendered the choral
background.
The choir considered outstand
ings in its rendition cif "Elijah
Rock" and "It's All Over Me"
with Ruby Coston, soprano, of
Warsaw and Richard Smith,
baritone of Miami, Fla., appear
ing as leading soloists.
Mrs. A. J. Taylor, Girl Scout
Executive, Dies; Rites Sunday
Mrs. A. J. Taylor, executive
director of District 2, Guilford
Randolph Girl Scout Council,
died at 4 p.m. Thursday, at
Duke Hospital. She was 55.
The former Bettie Georgia
Scott of Clover, Va? Mrs. Taylor
graduated from Virginia State
College at Petersburg and taught

Geraldine Sapp, Greensboro,
N. C., was recently appointed
acting district director of the
Randolph and Guilford Council
of the Girl Scouts of America.
She is serving as replace
ment for Mrs. A. J. Taylor who
died Thursday at Duke Hospit

Mrs. Sapp completed 15 years
of continuous volunteer service
in Girl Scouting in 1959. She
will supervise 54 troops and
more then 200 adult volunteers.
