Four hundred and forty-one
persons received degrees and
certificates at the 70th annual
commencement exercises held
here at the Greensboro War
Memorial Coliseum on Satur
day afternoon, June 3. . '

New York City, Doctor of Laws;

D. C., counselor to the assistant

president-emeritus of A&T, who

stitution from 1955 to 1960 and
as teacher and dean beginning
in 1926, Doctor of Humane
Letters.

Bennett Budget Set at $883,350
A budget of $883,350 for the
academic year 1961-62 was ap
proved by the executive com
mittee of the Bennett College
board of trustees as a highlight
o?. its annus' meeting ^at the col

increase of nearly $100,000 over
! the present budget of $785,475.
President Willa B. Player point
ed out that the major portion of
this increase is due to the Insti
tution's efforts to continue im
proving the quality of its teach
ing program.
Dr. Player, in her interim re
port to the committee, pointer!
out that through April 30 the
college this year has received
miscellaneous gifts amounting
to $117,000. She also pointed to
the steady increase in income
received from the United Negro
College Fund. Bennett this year
will receive approximately $43,
000 from this source and can
regularly include these funds ir
Us operating budget.
A new post of treasurer of
the college was created at the
Friday meeting and Dr. J. A.
TaTpley of Greensboro was
named to fill it. Announcement
was also made that the new
?dormitory now being construct
ed will be completed by July
1, two months ahead of sche
dule. A committee to select a
name for it includes Dr. Tar
pley, Mrs. H. C. Black, secretary
of the board, of Johnson City,
Tenn., and C. Everett Bacw,
chairman of the investments
j committee, of New York City.
Dedication of the new faci
lity, which will house 106 and
greatly relieve present crowd
ing in the residence halls, has
been tentatively set for the
weekend of October 20-22 when
the full board will be holding
its annual meeting nere.
Dr. F. D. Patterson, of New
York City, chairman of the
board, reported receipt of a
letter from the program director
of the International Cooperation
Administration (ICA) express
ing appreciation for the partici
pation of Dr. Player in the re
cent workshops for women's
education held in East and West
Africa.
