IN THE METHODIST CONFERENCE: Ninety-nine ministers were reappointed to pastorates and 28 others were given new assign ments by Bishop Charles F. Golden, at the closing session of the North Carolina-Virginia An nual Methodist Conference at Bennett College on Friday. Bishop Golden, head of the Nashville-Carolina Area of the denomination, had originally scheduled the conference to run through Saturday morning but so streamlined the business of the sessions that an earlier ad journment was possible. The delegates approved a reso lution calling for "elimination of the racial structure of the Methodist Church as soon as possible," hopefully by next year, at the meeting of the Gen eral Conference in Dallas, Texas. In another action the delegates approved a new constitution which will permit the Methodist Church to merge with the Evan gelical United Brethren under the name of the "United Meth odist Church." Approval by all Methodist conferences is needed to make this operative. Delegates and alternates to the General Conference and to the Jurisdictional Conference to be held later this summer were chosen. Lay delegate to the Genreal Conference will be C. M. Winchester, of Greens boro, with the Rev. Joseph B. Bethea, of Richmond, Va., min isterial. Lay delegates to the Jurisdictional Conference are R. C. Erwin and Earl N. Contee, with the Revs. J. W. Ferree, of Raleigh, and W. T. Brown, of Greensboro, as ministerial dele gates. Alternate delegates for the two upcoming conferences are: Lay ? S. T. Brooks and A. L. Morrison; ministerial ? Revs. J. H. McCallum and R. L. Clif ford. The conference admitted the following on trial: Peter E. A. Addo; Joseph A. Carter, Jr., Thomas J. Curry, Jr., Japheth F. A. Kerr and Wilburt A. Tal ley. Messrs. Talley and Curry were later ordained as ministers along with Richard Hall. Carter was ordained an elder, along with Thaddeus Williams. GRADTTATE ASSOCIATION OF BENNETT COLLEGE LEADS ALL CHAPTERS The Greensboro chapter ol the Bennett College Graduate Association, with a contribution of $1,800, led all chapters re porting at the All-Bennett luncheon on Saturday. Incomplete reports show con tributions just shy of the $5,000 and other chapters are expected to swell the total considerably in reports due June 30. Miller, Jr., who stressed the need for Increased alumni suport MISS EVELYN SARTIN Mrs. Sartin Honored On Woman's Day Mrs. Evelyn Sartin of 1817 Spencer Street, Greensboro, North Carolina was honored as the Woman of the Year of the United Institutional Baptist Church recently upon the occa sion of Woman's Day observ ance. Mrs. Sartin reported a to tal of $130.00. Mrs. Sartin, the former Miss Evelyn Willis, daughter of Mrs. Roxanna W. Pitts of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is married to John Sartin of Greensboro. She is a member of the Gate City Beauticians Association, Maco Beauty College Alumni Association, now holding the title Miss Maco Alumni for 1966-67. Bfritt, I North Carolina Speaker of the House, informing him that he ; has been selected to serve as ' (Continued on Page 8) A&T PROFESSOR GETS $56,000 RESEARCH GRANT TO STUDY EFFECTS OF PESTICIDES ON CIGARETTE SMOKERS A professor at A&T College' has been awarded a grant, $56, 576, by th': Council for Tobacco Research-USA, to conduct a re search project over a period of the next three years. Announcement of receipt of the grant was made this week by Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, presi dent of the college. Director ol the project is Dr. Naiter M. Chopra, professor of chemistry, who joined the A81T faculty in 1965. The study is entitled "The Degradation of DDT, TDE and Dieldrin in the Cigarette Main stream and Side - stream Smokes." According to Dr. Chopra, the study aims to determine the breakdown products of pesti cides, commonly used by tobacco producers, and how they may be affecting the health of those who smoke. The professor said that since I tobacco is neither a food nor a drug there is no limit to which a pesticide may be present in cigarete smoke. Recently Ger many has imposed limitations on the amount of perticidos which may be present in tobacco smoke, and it is likely that the USA will follow suit. The research study wilL begin this summer. A graduate of Punjab Univer sity in Lahore, India, (now In Pakistan, Dr. Chopra received the Ph. D. degree from the Uni versity of Dublin and partici pated in po^t-doctorial work at the University of Toronto, where he conducted a study od "Carcinogenic Substarces in To bacco Smoke." He served with the Canada Department of Agri culture on research work with pesticides for eight years prior to coming to A&T. He is married to the former Miss Santosh Dhenda and the couple has four children. Mac o Beauty College Commencement The thirty-first annual com mencement exercises for Maco Beauty College were held Sun day, June 11, 1967 at the Reid's Memorial C.M.E. Church, 1010 Reid Street, at 4:00 P.M. The main speaker for the program was Miss Wilhelmina M. Crosson, Former President of Palmer Memorial Institute, and her Subject was "Making ourselves Stand True". Mrs. H. E. Nelson, President of Maco College introduced the speaker. Diplomas were presented by Mrs. C. T. Snipes, State Instruc tor and President of the Gate City Beauticians Chapter, and Mrs. Lola A. Whitfield, Instruc tor of Maco. Music was furnished by the Men's Chorus of Providence Baptist Church under the direc tion of Mrs. Pauline Manley. Mr. D. V. London sang "If I Could Help Somebody". Invocation and Benedictio>. given by Reverend J. L. Pickens, Pastor, Reids Memorial C.M.E. Nineteen graduates received diplomas and citations. MACO ALUMNI OBSERVES "ALUMNI DAY". The Alumni Association of the Maco Beauty College observed "Alumni Day" Monday, June 12, 1967. A business meeting was held at the school, 229% S. Elm Street at 10:00 A. M. The prin cipal matter to come before the group was the completion of re ports by various committees, discussion of the By-Laws, and Completing plans for the Ban quet. The main social event of the Alumni Association was held Monday evening, June 12, 1967. The Annual Banquet, at the Mayes-Taylor Memorial Y.M.C. A. from 4:00 to 9:00 P.M.
