The Rowan Baptist
Convention To Be
Held June 28-30
The Rowan Baptist Sunday
Church Sfchool and the Rowan
Baptist Training Union will
meet in a convention, Wednes
day thru Friday, June 28, 29, 30,
1967 with the First Baptist
Church of Burlington, N. C. and
Dr. H. J. Cobb as the host pas
tor. The theme of the Training
Convention will be "Who Am
I? What Am I?" This part of the
convention will take place Wed
nesday and will include: an in
spirational message by Rev.
Leonard L. Macon, B.T.U. con
ferences and reports, and an an
nual sermon by Dr. K. O. P.
Goodwin, pastor of the Mount
Zion Baptist Church of Winston
Salem, North Carolina.
Thursday's program will be
devoted to the Sunday School
Convention with Mr. Jimmie
Barber of A&T College, presid
ing. This program will include
as keypoints: the inspirational
message by Rev. J. C. Robinson,
Sunday School workshops, the
president's annual message, com
mittee appointments, a conven
tion pageant, and the annual
convention sermon by the Rev.
E. L. Kirby of the Zion Baptist
Church of Reidsville. N. C.
Rev. Richard Adams, Second
Vice President of the Sunday
School Convention will preside
at Friday's session. The high
lights of the program will be the
inspirational message by Rev.
J. M. Kennedy, New Shepard
Baptist Church of Woodleaf. N.
C., and an address by the presi
dent of Palmer Memorial In
stitute. Mr. Harold E. Bragg of
Sedalia, N. C.
Future activities will be a fall
crusade, a Miss Rowan Baptist
Sunday School Convention Con
test, a One Day Session, Annual
Session and an Annual Pageant.
COMMUNITY VACATION
BIBLE SCHOOL
Community Vacation Bible
School was held for the benefit
of the children of the B'anks St.
community. The children were
between the ages of six and
twelve. The hours were from
9:00-12:00 noon. The purpose
was to elevate the minds of the
boys and girls spiritually. Mrs.
G. McNeille who has done mis
sionary work among children
before was the director.

W. Avery Jones, 76, a veteran
lawyer, became the new presi
dent of Winston Mutual Life
Insurance Company Thursday,
June 15 as the result of an
election by the Board of Direc
tors.
He was a vice president and
general counsel of Winston Mu
tual during the past 21, years.
He succeeds the late Edward
Everett Hill as president. Hill,
who had held office 14 years,
died suddenly of a heart attack
Friday, June 9 at his home.
Rumor L. Oden, agency di
rector for the past two years,
was elected to the board to
succeed Hill.
Jones heads a company that
was founded nearly 61 years
ago. Winston Mutual is valued
at more than $5,000,000 and has
more than $26,000,000 of in
surance in force. It is one of
only two Negro owned and op
erated insurance companies
with home offices in the state
of North Carolina.
In Jones Winston Mutual has
its sixth president, a native of
Pensacola, Fla. and a graduate
of Florida A & M University
and the Howard University
Law School.
"I shall endeavor to carry on
and to accelerate the progress
of the company," Jones said as

He also expressed interest in
the employment of a young
lawyer to do his leg work and
