BETHEL A.M.E. Annual Missionary Day Observance The Missionary Society o! Bethel A.M.E. Church will ob serve its Annual "Missionary Day" Sunday, June 23. Guest speaker for the 11 o'clock ser vice will bs Mrs. Dorothy Jones of Reidsville, N. C. Mrs. Jones is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. G. M. Phelps of this city. All Missionaries will wear white. At 7 p.m. Mrs. Dorothy Way mon will lecture and show slides. Missionaries from churches throughout the city are extended a cordial invita tion to attend both of these ser vices. A treat is in store for all who may come. Women's Missionary Society Area Meeting ? Theme: "Faith in Action" and Missionary Queen Coronation The Area Meeting of tha Women's Missionary Society of the A. M. E. Church was held Thursday, June 13, in the Fel lowshp Hall at Bethel Church on Regan Street at Friendly Avenue, with registration be ginning at 2:00 p. m. The meet ing was called to order at 2:30 p. m. by Mrs. M. L>. Johnson; Welcome, Mrs. Naomi Wynn; Response by Mrs. J. R. Cheek. Mrs. L. L. Anderson, Area Chairman, presided. Following the business session' Reports of Standing Committees were made. The Christine S. Smith Foreign Missions, Mrs. C. T. Harris; Christian Social Re lations, a Workshop, by Mrs. J. A. Booker; Promotion and Mis sionary Education: The Mission ary Society at Work, Mrs. B. M. Nance and Mrs. Marie Pittman: Introduction of ministers and friends, Tanner-Turner Memo rial, Mrs. Annie Vincent. The Missionary Hymn, "Spirit of the Living God," was sung by all. The meeting closed with the Missionary Benediction. At 6 p. m., a delicious supper was served by the Social Com mittee of Bethel Church. The Coronation of the Mis sionary Queen was held at 8 p. m. Opening song, "O Zion Haste Thy Mission High Fulfilling," with Mrs. Maude Edwards at the piano. Prayer was offered by Mrs. Nettie Thompson. Read ing, Mrs. Amelia Bowers; Solo, "O Danny Boy," Mrs. C. T. Harris; Recitation, "The Ladies' Aid," by Mrs. Edna Jett of High Point, N. C. The Queens from Churches in the Area were escorted to the rostrum by their pastors. They were radiant in their evening dresses of different colors. Mrs 3. A. Booker read the list ol Queens and their placing in the contest. Mrs. Booker serves as Program Chairman for the Area. Mrs. Ada Lindsay of Persim mon Grove A.M.E. Church was crowned Queen, having reported the largest amount of money. Church reported the next largest amount. She and the Queen received a token pre sented by Mrs. Rankin. The Queen received a bouquet of pink and white carnations and baby breaths, with pink and white ribbon streamers. Mrs. L. L. Anderson presented a token to Mrs. Rankin. Other Missionaries taking part in the contest were: Mrs. Alvenia Amaker, East Greens boro Circuit; Mrs. Cassie Beatty. St. James, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Mrs. Edith White, Pearson Me morial, High Point, N. C.; Mrs. Essie Ratcliff, Clover Garden A. M. E. Church; Mrs. Alice Rawls, St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Mt. Airy, N. C.; Mrs. Alice Mat thews, Liberty Circuit; Mrs. Gussie Blackwell, Oak Ridge Circuit: and Mrs. Mable Patrick, St. John A.M.E. Church, Gib sonville, N. C. Mrs. J. R. Cheek presented the Area Chairman, Mrs. An derson, a corsage of white car nations and dollar bills one for each of the seven years of faith ful leadership in the Area. Mrs. Anderson thanked all who contributed their time and talents to the success of the Area meeting, and the Social Committee of Bethel Church for the delicious and hearty din ner; and expressed her hope for the continuation of the growth | of the work. Mrs. Nannie Day and Mrs. Ethel Slade of the Altamaha Circuit presented to Mrs. J. R. Cheek a corsage of dollar bills for her cooperation and assist ance in the Area. A short but impressive memo rial service was conducted for the departed members this Con ference year, led by Miss Nellie Murphy and Mrs. Cora Alston of Bethel Church. Fathers Honored at Bethel Chnrch During the Father's Day Ser vice at Bethel Church Sunday, June 16, sponsored by the Schol arship Fund Club, Mr. Major Reid was awarded a token, hon oring the Father of Advanced Years. Harold Enzlow was hon ored as the youngest father in the church in absentia. His wife received the token. The presen tation was made by Mrs. Mary L. Tanner, President of the club. The Father's Day message was delivered by the pastor, Rev. Leon S. Penn, Sr., who used as a subject, "Fathers Who Care." His text was taken from the 103rd Psalms and the 13th verse: "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him," emphasiz ing the father's responsibility to his family. i Scholarship recipients from the club throughout the years, beginning 1955, are: Mrs. Cos tella Thompson Hill ? 1955; Mrs. Marian Benton Tasco ? 1956; Miss Kay Frances Henry and Mrs. Katheryne Gilmer Rld dick ? 1957; Mrs. Frances Crofl SENATORS BROOKE AND SCOTT EVALUATE FAIR HOUSING BILL, DR. KING'S WORK Scott Praised for Support of Civil Rights Senator Edward Brooke (R. Mass.) this week praised Sena top Hugh Scott (R.-Pa.) for his leadership in helping pass the Worker Protection - Fair Housing Act, the 1968 civil rights legislation. During a television and ra dio program on which they appeared, Sen. Brooke said, . . you (Sen. Scott) certain ly are deserving and entitled to much commendation for the part that you played in the passage of the civil rights legislation in the Senate." Sen. Brooke commented further on Sen. Scott's efforts to urge prompt passage of the bill in the House of Repre sentatives. Both Senators then dis cussed the implications of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Sen. Scott said: "Martin Lu ther King was an impatient man, but it was the kind of impatience which, if it was not then understood, had better now be evaluated and under stood. "Pope John XXIII was an impatient man. He didn't have much time. Calvin was an im patient man. Luther was an impatient man. The work of men on earth ? God's work ? is done by impatient men." Sen. Brooke added: "K jh, Hugh Scott, you are an im patient man and I'd like to be an impatient man myself, and I know yovt get really filled up about this. Appearing on the program will be the Soul Stirrers from Chicago, 111., The Davis Sisters from Philadelphia, Pa., The Swannee Quintet from Augusta Ga., and The Swan Silvertones from Pittsburg, Pa. Everyone is invited to attend.
