SOCIAL HAPPENINGS
Borrowing Hearts
Again, with unexpected sad
denness, death has come among
us. The shock of the passing of
Mrs. Irma Law Hanner is visi
bly and profoundly felt by those
with whom she had daily con
tact. We at Bethel pause to pay
our tribute of love and affection
and respect to her memory. We
join in extending to the mem
bers of her bereaved family our
heartfelt sympathy, and pray
that in the years that lie ahead
the good Lord will sustain them
and give them peace and
health.

A THOUGHT TO PONDER
"This Way To Power"
We live in a day of unprece
dented change. There are ex
citing frontiers on every hand,
yet most Christians today are
not facing these challenges with
the power that is their right.
According to present statistics,
it takes a year's effort on the
part of one thousand laymen
and six pastors to introduce a
single person to Christ.

Missionary Circle Meet*
The Winnie Lewis Missionary
Circle met Thursday night, July
25, in the Intermediate Class
room at Bethel Church for their
regular monthly meeting, with
the chairman, Mrs. Aleece
Faulkner, presiding. The devo
tion was led by Mrs. Carrie
Black in the absence of Mrs.
Ethel Ruffin by singing, "Have
Thine Own Way, Lord". Prayer
was repeated in unison. The
song, "For You X Am Praying,"
closed the devotion.
During the business session,
activities for the fall were dis
cussed.
Several members told of
their trips this summer. Mrs.
Ida B. Wilkins gave a brief re
sume of her trip to Dallas, Tex.
this month. Mrs. W. M. Verble,
Mrs. Marion Watson and Mrs.
Florence Kesler talked briefly
of their trip to Cherkoee, and
the drama they saw, "Unto
These Hills" which was beauti
ful, indeed. The Circle plan to
take a trip next year.
Following the sick report the
meeting adjourned with the
Missionary Benediction, to meet
again September 12, 1968.
CHANGE IN
SOCIAL, SECURITY LAW
A recent change in the social
security law makes it easier for
young workers to qualify for dis
ability benefits, according to
Charles E. Myers of the Greens
boro Social Security Office. Per
sons who become disabled before
age 31 do not need as many
work credits to get disability
benefits as were required under
the old law, adds Mr. Myers.
Before, social security credits
were generally needed for at
least five out of the last ten
years before the disability start
ed. Now, persons who become
disabled between 24 and 31 need
credits for only half the time
between 21 and the time they
become unable to work. Persons
who are disabled before age 24
need only 1-1/2 years of work
credits out of the 3-year period
ending when their disability be
gan.
Mr. Myers advises anyone who
became disabled before age 31 to
get in touch with the social se
curit yoffice. This applies even
if a previously filed claim was
denied for too few work credits.
The Greensboro Social Security
Office is located at Room B-32,
Old Post Office Building, 324
West Market Street. The office
hours are 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
except on Mondays when the of
fice is open from 8:45 a.m. until
7:00 p.m.

us to God as the one who not
only has acted in the past but
also acts in the present and has
promised to act in the future.
In a day when children are dy
ing from starvation, when peo
ple are either dying or being
deformed by napalm, how does
one proclaim that God is work
ing for good in his world? If
God is still acting in our his
tory, why does he not put an
end to such terror?
But the presence of God as
the one who made us and who
holds our future in his hands is
precisely the message the church
is called to proclaim. History is
no more in the hands of the
war gods of the 1960's than it
was in the hands of Marduk.
The Church's Failure
The problem the chnrch faces
In today's world Is one of a
credibility gap. Many persons do
not believe what we preach. Per
haps one reason for this failure
to believe is that we often live
as though we don't believe it
either. It is very easy to talk
about the love of God for all men
on Sunday but very difficult to
love all men on Monday.
If we as Christians are going to
talk about God's concern for the
well-being of society, we are go
ing to have to be concerned about
the well-being of society.
Those of us who are white,
middle-class Protestants must be
ready to identify ourselves with
the poor, the colored, the lonely.
Those of us who belong to the
economically secure section of
the Negro community must be
ready to risk what we are and
what we have by identifying with
our lower-class brothers. We
must further be ready to risk
the insults of white men by
striving to close the gaps that
separate these groups. Those of
us who are among the lower
economic classes of all races
must be ready to cast off the
reverse snobbery that believes
all people who have money are
heartless and snobbish. Those
of us who tire wealthy must not
allow our money to data our
prime loyalty, which belongs to
God.
If Christians are going to make
any progress toward closing the
credibility gap, we must learn
to put ourselves in the place of
others ? to sense their needs,
hopes, ambitions, and desires.
We must be able to speak hope

The Witness of Others
Stories from World War II
tell of Christians who, when
Jews were forced to wear yel
low arm bands to identify them
selves as Jews, also wore the
arm bands. This action could
even mean a trip to the gas
chamber for the Christians. But
these Christians felt that the
best way they could proclaim
the love of God was to identify
with those who were oppressed.
In The Plague Albert Camus
tells of a priest who refuses to
call a doctor when he is infected
with the plague because he feels
he must walk through the valley
of death with his people. Clutch
ing his crucifix to his breast
and turning his face to the wall,
he dies with his people. This,
said Camus, is what it means
to be a man.
The Contagion of Grace
Certainly, not everyone with
whom we become involved will
become a Christian. Each indi
vidual must make this decision
for himself. Our reason for
identifying with others is that
we have been commanded by
our Lord to love others as we
love ourselves, regardless of the
outcome.
WHAT WILL WE
DO ABOUT IT?
We are always in danger of
reading and talking about the
world's problems but never be
coming involved in doing any
thing about them. On the other
hand, reading and discussion

maybe the means by which God
leads us to act on these prob

book in this respect is The
Plague, by Albert Camus. Ca
mus was not a Christian, but his
book makes a good statement of
Christian compassion. Your class
might want to read this book
and spend a couple of evenings
discussing it, or perhaps a public
school teacher or librarian
would agree to review it for
your class sometime.
You might want to read on a
couple of topics related to the
lesson. The writer refers to God
by using the name "Yahweh"
(pronounced YAH-way). Check
the origin of this name in a
Bible dictionary. (Look under
"God".) You might also want
to check for more information
on Second Isaiah. (Look under
"Isaiah";) Were you previously
aware that 'this book had more
than one author?
Turn back to the section en
titled "What the Scripture Says
to Us." Check the third para
graph under the heading "The
Church's Failure." Here the
author is talking about middle
class people identifying with
the poor and colored and lonely,
Negroes helping their own peo

understanding middle-class peo

large piece of paper or a chalk
board. Under each heading list
