JOHNSON
Mr. Rudolphus A. Johnson of
Brooklyn, N. Y. and formerly
of the Bass Chapel Community,
died Thursday, August 29, 1968
In a Brooklyn, New York hos
pital. Funeral services were
held Wednesday, September 4,
1968 at 4:00 p. m. at the Bass
Chapel Methodist Church. The
Reverend Willie Napper offici
ated and the pastor of the
church, Rev. J. W. Jones, as
sisted. Burial followed in the
church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Louise Wicker Johnson of
the home; six sisters, Mrs. An
nie Pleasant, Mrs. Mary Howell,
Mrs. Florilla Whitted, all of
Greensboro, N. C., Mrs. Viola
Whitsett of Brown Summitt, N.
Cv and Miss Virginia Johnson
and Mrs.- Norethea Floyd, both
of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers,
Mr. Sidney Johnson of Reids
ville, N. C., Mr. James R. John
son of New York City and Mr.

Mr. Jesse Thompson, age 65,
of 901 Asheboro Street, died
September 2, 1968 at L. Rich
ardson Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, Sept. 5, at Hargett's
Memorial Chapel at 3:00 p. m.
Rev. A. A. Harris of Durham,
N. C. officiated. Burial followed
In Maplewood Cemetery.
He is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Jessie Mae Laws of
Greensboro, N. C.; one son, Mr.
Lawyer Thompson of Philadel
phia, Pa.; one brother, Mr.
Esau Thompson of Greensboro;
a host of nieces and nephews,
grandchildren and other rela

Mr. Alfonso Guest, age 63,
died at Moses Cone Memorial
Hospital, Friday, August 30th,
following a brief illness. He
lived at 3913 Freeman Mill
Road.
Funeral service was held
Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2:00 p. m.,
Ebenezer Baptist Church. Rev.
James McCoy, pastor, offici
ated. Burial followed in church
cemetery. The body remained
at Brown's Funeral Home until
the hour of service.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Pauline E. Guest; five
daughters, Mrs. Janet Dailey,
Mrs. Pauline McLaughlin, Miss

of Greensboro, and Miss Ethel

pastor, officiated. Services were
held at 1:00 p. m. Burial fol
lowed in Piedmont Memorial
Park.
She is survived by her hus
band, Crayton Hawthorne of
the home; her mother, Mrs.
Nellie Garner of Greensboro, N.
C.; other relatives and friends.

M. Phelps, Jr. of San Diego,
Calif., pastor at St. Paul United
Methodist Church since 1955.
Rev. Phelps, Jr., is a graduate
of Clark College and Gammon
Theological Seminary, and has
done graduate work in Boston
University and the University
ol San Diego.
Rev. Phelps in his preaching
mission and evangelistic efforts
will build his messages around
the following topics: Monday
night, "When You Are Ready
to Listen"; Tuesday night, "Ex

While Rock Baptist Church Completes Plans For Ground Breaking
Th? White Rock Baptist
Church has completed plans for
breaking ground soon for the
above proposed church building.
It consists of a sanctuary which
will seat 1,000 persons; an ad
ministration area including a
church library; an educational
wing and a basement under
neath the sanctuary; 32 class
rooms; facilities for a 50 chil
dren's Day Nursery; a multi
purpose area in the basement
which will seat 350 persons at a
banquet; a modern kitchen;
changing rooms for baptismal
candidates and will be air con
ditioned. The building consists
of approximately 28,000 square
feet of floor space.
The church office is located
between the sanctuary and the
educational wing (to the right
of the sanctuary), and includes
a reception area, a work room,
library, secretary's office and
pastor's study.
The exterior will consist of
Alabama Limestone, Split Face
(Ashlar). Paved off street park
ing will be provided for 175
cars, which will be extended
later.
The church's organ which was
used in the former church
building is being rebuilt by the
Moller Organ Company in
Hagerstown, Maryland.
The church membership of
1,250 active members have been
worshiping in B. N. Duke Audi
torium, North Carolina College
since September of 1967 when
the former church building
which was founded In 1866 at
600 Fayetteville Street, was
taken by Durham's Redevelop
ment Commission to make way
for the expressway.
The church was pastored by
the Rev. Dr. Miles Mark Fisher
from 1932-1965. He now lives in
Richmond, Va. It has beep pas
tored by Lorenzo A. Lynch since
September 1, 1965. >
The congregation has almost
completed negotiations with the
3 M. Dixon, Tnc, contractors of
Greensboro, the lowest bidder
on the proposed construction.
Sealed bids were opened July
18.
