died Friday, Feb. 21, at L.
Richardson Memorial Hospital
after a brief illness. Funeral
was at 4 p. m. Monday at the
New Goshen United Methodist
Church. The Rev. Eugene Black
officiated, assisted by Rev. J.
E. McCoy.
Survivors are: widow, Mrs.
Beatrice Fuller Ledwell; two
daughters, Elreta and Edwina
Ledwell, both of the home; sis
ters, Mrs. Bernice Clapp, Mrs.

boro; two half-brothers, James

age 71, died at a local hospital
Friday, Feb. 21, following sev
eral months ilness. She lived at

service was held Tuesday, Feb.
25, 3:30 p. m., St. Stephen
United Church of Christ. Burial
followed in Peidmont Memorial
Park. The family received
their friends at Brown's Fune
ral Home Monday evening, 7-9.

41, wife of Robert Gaither of

at a Chapel Hill hospital.

C, on Monday, Feb. 24, 1969 at

Bethea, minister, officiated.
Nicholas Longworth Dillard,
the son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. James W. Dillard was'
born in Leaksville, N. C. March j
7, 1906. He departed this life ;
Friday, Feb. 21, 1969 in Duke
Hospital, Durham, N. C. after
a short illness. His early life
was spent in Leaksville and
Reidsville, N. C. where he at
tended public schools, and fur- 1
thered his education at Shaw
University, Raleigh, N. C.,
where he received the A.B. de
gree. Later he rrceived his
Master's Degree from Michigan
University, Ann Arbor, Mich.,
and attended other universities
including Tuskegee Institute
and N. C. College.
He was a member of St.
Matthew's Methodist Church,
Greensboro, N. C. and served
faithfully at and sang with the
Pearson Chapel AME Church
of Yanceyville. He was princi
pal of Caswell County High
School for 38 years; member of
the N. C. Teachers Assn.; mem
ber of the Shaw Alumni Assn..
who presented him a plaque
for 25 years of distinguished
service; member of the Schools
Masters Club; and was ap
pointed by the former Governor
Sanford to the Trustee Board
of Winston-Salem State Col
lege. His affiliations with fra
ternal and civic organizations
included membership In Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity, Aljen's
Chapel Masonic Lodge No. 676
and Executive Secretary of
Caswell County Credit Union.

professor of Anthropology and
American Negro Folklore at
Livingstone College and visiting
professor at A. & T. State Uni
versity, will be the speaker.

J. Mason Brewer, Bachelor
of Arts, Master of Arts, and
Doctor of Letters, is rated by
American Folklore Scholars
and Literary critics as Amer
ica's most distinguished Negro
folklorist, and one of the four
leading folktale authors writing
in this country today regardless
of race, creed, or color. He has
had more Negro Folktales pub
lished than any other American
author of the past, or present.

His published collections of
folktales number seven, and the
number of tales he has had
published totals 366.
He is the only member of his
race who has served on the Re
search Committee of the Amer
ican Folklore Society, on its
Council, and as one of the offi
cers of this organization; he
served as second vice-president
of the society in the year 1954.
He is also the only member of
his race who has ever been
elected a member of the Texas
