Sunday School Lesson
(Continued from Page 3)
I am involved with others for
Christ's sake ? because he has
so graciously created, preserved,
and redeemed me. He desires
every soul and all society to
blossom. That it his good news,
and I am a part of it. So 1 try
to point not to myself but to
him. *
Many church people give
themselves to others in com
munity service, but they do not
understand that they are there
for Christ's sake and the gos
pel's. They do not point effec
tively beyond themselves.
Self-Fulfillment
A man who loses himself for
Christ's sake and the gospel's
is safe. He is safe in knowing
what life is all about ? the
meaning of existence. He is
safe in God's acceptance and
does not have to save himself
or others; he is safe because he
is free from self-preoccupation,
able to live for others and en
Joy life as it comes. He is safe
in God's gift of eternal life.
The rich young ruler wanted
to follow Jesus. He had obeyed
the commandments from his
youth, but he could not give up
the one thing that kept him
from losing himself in Christ's
cause ? his money. What he
could not see was the way that
band of adventurous disciples
would move down the road in
history, claiming the nations for
Christ.
What a fulfillment of life
could have been his! What a
fulfillment of life can be ours!
What Will We Do About It?
Pick out some hymns on dis
cipleship and read them over
as poetry. Give special attention
to George Matheson's "O Love
That Wilt Not Let Me Go."
What ideas of discipleship do
these hymns suggest?
If the person needing your
help was your brother, would
you risk danger for his sake?
Do you answer, "Yessir, I
would"?
Discuss: Who are some people
you have known or read about
that lost themselves for Christ's
sake and the gospel's?
Discuss the posibility of or
ganizing a covenant group in
your church that will agree to
live by certain disciplines of
self-denial and service for
Christ What are some disci
plines that members of such a
group should follow?
Our Father, we thank thee
for men and women who have
lost themselves in thy service.
Take from us fear and timidity
so that in thy spirit we may give
ourselves in loving, service to
others. Help us overcome sel
fish desires and purposes that
keep us from aligning ourselves
with thy great purpose and will
for all mankind. Amen.
