Search For Freedom Eludes Man
Negro Judge Tells A&T Graduates
The 1969 graduating clan at
A&T State University was told
Sunday that a basic lack of self
respect and respect for the other
man have denied the world the
freedom it seeks.
"The search for freedom has
eluded man's grasp since the
dawn of history," said District
Court Judge Elreta Alexander,
"and the clock of eternity is
running out."
Using as her theme "The
Commencement and Conquest
of Freedom," Judge Alexander
told the record 530 graduates,
their parents and friends who
packed Moore Gymnasium that
"a man Is free when he can see
that his brother is none other
than he."
' Youth sees our civilization,
our society, and rightly so, as
a collosal flop," added Judge
Alexander, "and we have been
talking about human brother
hood for a long time."
The articulate Judge Alexan
der, the first Negro woman Jur
ist in North Carolina, told the
graduates that awareness, ap
preciation and accomodation are
worthwhile values to pursue.
"We must have an awareness
of the nature of man as a hu
man being, a social being and
an eternal being," she said.
"Hate, Jealousy and revenge are
self defeating In the discovery
and utilization of Ood-glven
talents."
Judge Alexander said that ac
comodation requires that ability
to listen to almost anything
without losing our tempers and
self confidence.
"Everybody has got to do his
thing," she said. "Some persona
like to associate Ala popular
theme with the vulgar, the un
couth, the odd balls and the
hippies. But I say that each can
do his own thing, with due re
spect for the other's thing."
Society definitely needs more
appreciation, noted Judge Alex
ander. "Appreciation requires us
to believe that all men are
equal," she said. She urged the
graduates to appreciate their
purpose in being and their ulti
mate dependency on God.
"Civilization is preparing for
its finals," she concluded, "but
out of the turmoil of the past,
the chaos of the present, the
despair of the future, I hear
voices of hope."
Judge Alexander urged the
graduates to chart through their
lives, "the course to the free
dom and liberation of man."
The graduates were presented
for degrees bp Dr. Glenn F.
Rankin, dean of academic af
fairs. After conferring the de
grees, A&T President Dr. Lewis
C. Dowdy announced that the
1969 class contains the largest
number of honor students and
fellowship winners in the Uni
versity's history.
Dr. Dowdy also conferred
master's degrees on 30 students.
