COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT
OFFICERS SEEK INCREASE
IN GIFTS FROM
LIVE DONORS
"It is much better to give
away while you are living than
when you are dead." That was
the bit of advice given to col
lege development officers last
Tuesday at a symposium at A&T
State University.
Trying to encourage persons
to make donations to their fav
orite educational institution
while they are living is the
prime business of Walter Mor
tensen, executive director of the
Institute for Philanthropic Plan
ning Inc. of New York City.
Participating in the meeting
at A&T were development of
ficers from Elon College, High
Point College, Bennett College,
the University of North Carolina
at Greensboro, Guilford College
and Greensboro College.
Mortensen said that approxi
mately 90 per cent of the en
dowments of American colleges
is received through deferred
giving and bequests.
"There is definitely an up
trend in this method of giving,"
said Mortensen. "In fact, it has
more than doubled in the last
seven years."
Mortensen urges the develop
ment officers to encourage don
ors to aid their favorite institu
tions by some method of deferr
ed giving.
"If a donor makes a contribu
tion in his lifetime, he receives
a charitable contribution (tax
relief) towards his current in
come.
MERL CODE ALL-AMERICAN
PICK; AWAITS POSSIBLE
BID FROM PROS
By Richard Moore
Marvelous Merl Code, one of
the most outstanding defensive
backs ever to play for North
Carolina A&T this week became
the college's latest Little Ail
American.
Code, a native of Seneca, S.
C., was picked on the first team
of the prestigious Associated
Press Little All-American Team.
He is one of three players from
North Carolina colleges selected
for the team.
Code's selection marked the
third time in three years that
Aggie players have been named
to national teams. Willie Pear
son, formerly with the Miami
Dolphins, made the NAIA All
American team In 1968 and
Elvin Bethea, star defensive end
with the Houston Oilers, made
the NAIA team in 1967.
Two other Aggies, linebacker
Ralph Coleman and comerback
Doug Westmoreland, were given
honorable mention honors on the
I960 Associated Press All-Amer
ican Team. Coleman is a sopho
more and Westmoreland is a
junior.
Code's latest honor is a fitting
climax for the hardworking de
fender. Getting involved in foot
ball wasn't easy for Code. As a
118-pound freshman back in
Seneca, he was shooed back into
the dressing room even before
the team held its first practice.
There was just no room for an
118-pounder.
"I was the smallest boy in
my class until I got in the 10th
grade," said Code in a recent
interview.
Not to be outdone after the
football coach sent him to the
showers, Code remained with
his other two loves, baseball and
basketball.
In baseball, he became the
starting second baseman on the
high school team while only a
seventh grader.
He also led the high school
basketball team to a regional
championship.
Even with these honors, Code
never lost the desire to play
football. "All of the boys on
my side of town wanted to play,"
he said, "and I was no excep
tion."
Code's break came between
his sophomore and junior years.
He gained 30 pounds, added four
inches and became the starting
quarterback.
Apparently he was a pretty
good high school quarterback,
at least he came to A&T in that
position. When Hornsby Howell
became the Aggies' coach last
season, he shifted Code to cor
nerback.
Code, who will graduate in
June, is an honor student ma
joring in mathematics engineer
ing.
