This era was the period of the rise of the scribes, of worship in the synagogue, of the dispersion (scattering) of the Jews to distant lands around the Mediterranean Sea, and the attempt to maintain purity of thought and worship while liv ing under the rale of Persians, Greeks, and Romans. Jesus' Teaching About the Kingdom In a previous lesson we have discussed the different ways in which Jews in the time of Jesus understood the coming of the Kingdom. Now let us look at some of the characteristics of the Kingdom as found in the teachings of Jesus. The coming of the Kingdom meant that God would rule in the hearts of men. As a result men would do the will of God. This will is not confined to the inner life only, but transforms every part of earthly existence, such as marriage and the fam ily, the state, and society. Though Jesus himself was not specific in how the kingdom of God would affect all these re lationships, the history of Chris tianity shows that the regene rating spirit of Christ has trans formed every society in which his teachings have taken root Another aspect of the king dom of God is that the disciple receives forgiveness of his sins. Furthermore, he receives the assurance of eternal life. Etern al life is a gift of God, not a reward earned through merit Since repentance and faith are required to enter the King dom, the dispositions of thoM who are a part of It are marked by poverty of spirit humility, meekness, and lowliness of heart. These dispositions are spontaneous, not mechanical. (Continued on Page 8) GIVE THEM A LASTING GIFT THE WORLD'S GREATEST ENCYCLOPEDIA!
