Deaths MISS IRENE MARTIN Miss Irene Martin, age 49 o 1 ] 417 Boyd St. died at Moses Cone Hospital Saturday, Jan. 24th fol lowing a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 28th, 3:30 P.M. from Bethel A.M.E. Church. Burial followed In Maple wood Cemetery. The family received their friends at Brown's Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 8:30 until 8:00. Survivors include mother, Mrs. Mary Arnold; brother, George Martin; sister, Mrs. Carolyn Boyd, all of Greens boro, N. C. Brown's Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. MRS. INEZ RICHMOND Mrs. Inez Richmond, age 53, died at Moses Cone Hospital Friday, Jan. 23rd following a brief illness. She lived at 927 Pearson St Funeral servtres were held Thursday, Jan. 29th 2:00 Pit from Brown's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Pied mont Memorial Park. Survivors include brothers, Bennie Mack, Greensboro; John Mack and Lonnie Mack, Wlnns boro, S. C.; sisters, Mrs. Rox anna Flair, Mrs. Lula Evans and Mrs. Lillie Bell Ashburn, Winnsboro, S. C., Mrs. Mar? Kennedy, Charlotte, N. C. Brown's Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. MR. B. H. GREEN Mr. Benjamin Harrison Green, age 65. died at his home, Rt I, Pleasant Garden, N. C. Satur day, Jan. 24th following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 27th, 2:00 PM. from Cox's Chapel Methodist Church, Ramseur, N. C. Burial followed in the church cemetery. ALL-TIME GREAT CIA A STARS TO BE HONORED AT TOURNEY An all-time great basketball team, representing the top play ers who have appeared in the CIAA Tournament over the past 24 years, will be honored at the annual tournament February 26 28. Sponsors of the tournament said this week that the select mythical team will be chosen by a panel of coaches, fans and officials from throughout the nation. The 10 members of the team will be honored guests at the tournament and will be honored at a special luncheon February 28 by Commercial Credit Com pany of Baltimore, Md. "This will be a real dream team," said L. D. Smith of Rich mond, Va., chairman of the tournament committee, "as this conference has produce -1 gome of the outstanding basketball players of this period." Serving as honorary chair man of the blue ribbon selec tion committee will be Johnny McLendon, one of the nation's most successful basketball coaches. McLendon's North Carolina College team won the original CIAA Tournament in 1846 by beating Virginia Union in triple overtime. He has also coached at Hamp ton Institute, Kentucky State, Cleveland State and Tennessee State. While at Tennessee State, his teams won an unprecedented three straight NAIA champion ships. McLendon also formerly coached the Cleveland Pipers ol the American Basketball Lea gue. He was the first black head coach ih a professional league. One of the considered authori ties of "fast break" basketball, McLendon also coached the Den ver Rockets, also of the ABA. McLendon was one of four members of the original CXAA Tournament committees. The first playoffs were staged at Turner's Arena in Washington. D. C. The tournament has also been held in Baltimore, Durham and W ins t on-Salem. Current pro basketball stand outs who have played in the CIAA Tournament include Earl Monroe and Mike Davis, Bal timore Bullets; A1 Attles, play er-assistant coach with the San Francisco Warriors and Bobby Dandridge, Milwaukee Bucs.
