Mind Power, Love Of Own Things
Urged On 500 Graduates At A&T
Greensboro, N. C. ? Civil
rights leader Dr. Jesse Jackson
called for A&T State Univer
sity's 500 graduating seniors to
make "mind power" one of their
top priorities.
Speaking Sunday at the Uni
versity's 79th annual baccalaur
eate-commencement in Greens
boro Memorial Stadium, Jack
son said:
"I want the black skin to em
body mind power, I want us to
be first, not just in a foot race,
but aso in humanitarianism and
morals."
Jackson, who was honored by
A&T with a doctor of humane
letters degree at the exercises,
urged the graduates and their
4,000 parents and friends to
"learn to be a healer and lover
and a respector of all mankind."
"You must develop your mind
if you are going to change this
world," added Jackson. "You
must remain in the eternal pur- j
suit of truth."
Jackson called for the contin
uance of black universities, but
said these need to believe! more
in themselves.
"I am not sure that the black
university believes in itself," he
said. "Black universities were
called out of a special need and
that need still exists."
Jackson said the major uni
versities are in trouble because
they have violated the ethics
of truth.

Mrs. Myrtle Bracey was re
cently declared Woman of the
Year upon the occasion of Wo
man's Day Observance at the
United Institutional Baptist Ch
urch, Greensboro, N. C. She re
ported the highest amount in our
financial drive. Mrs. Bracey is a
native of Chadbourn, N. C. and
was formerly a member of the
Saint Stephens Baptist Church in
her home town. Soon after com
ing to Greensboro, she joined the
United Institutional Baptist Ch
urch where she has distinguish
edhtrself in the total program
of the Church. "Myrt", as she
is affectionately known by her
friends, serves as devotional
leader for the Hour of Prayer
Services, member of the Ever- 1
Ready Chorus and Spiritual j
Choirs. She has always been -
willing to serve wherever and I
whenever needed.
Mrs. Bracey is not only deep- j
ly spiritual and demonstrative
in her religion, she has a deep
sense of humor and is considered
the Comedienne of the Church.
It's a joy to be in her presence.

Vacation Bible School
The Vacation Bible School will
begin at Bethel Church, Monday,
June 8, and will continue thru
Friday, June 19. Registration
will begin Sunday, June 7.

Graduates Receive Scholarships
Two graduating seniors at
James B. Dudley Senior High
School have received scholar
ships valued at $10,000 each. In
ceremonies at the school gym
nasium, Cadet Major Wendell
Johnson and Cadet 1st Lit. Wil
liam Jennings of the Dudley Air
Force Junior ROTC received
their awards.
Johnson's is an Air Force
scholarship for study at Howard
University. The award, which is
based on outstanding scholarship
and leadership, will cover tu
ition, fees, books, room, board
and a cash stipend of $50 per
month. He will be commissioned
as a second lieutenane in the Air
Force upon graduation, and re
main on active duty at least
four years.
Johnson's parents are Mr. and
Mrs. Clifton Johnson, 1 Ross
Court. His scholarship award
was presented by Lt. Col. Rob
ert O. Thornton, professor of
aerospace studies at A&T State
University.
Jennings' scholarship was giv
en by the Army for study at the
Citadel. It involves the same
terms as Johnson's Air Force
grant. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Raymond E. Jennings, 2206
Dinsmore Street. Making the
presentation to Jennings was Lit.
Col. William Graves, Professor
of military sciences at Dudley.
