COLLEGE STUDENTS DONATE TALENTS By Richard E. Moore The current unrest among the nation's college students hasn't i dimmed Mrs. Mildred Bonner's view that young people do as much building as tearing down. She oilers as an example^ the thriving psychology laboratory two ol her students helped her to create this semester. "We needed a laboratory and we didn't have the money lor one," said Mrs. Bonner. "And these two young men took it upon themselves to see that we got one." Armed only with a $1,000 grant she had received from Florida State University, Mrs. Bonner and the students have converted a little-used storage room in the basement ot Carver Hall into a lab facility to han dle A&T's 100 psychology ma jors. She said that one student, Michael Freeman, worked two to three hours, six days a week cleaning the room and organiz ing the lab. "We first took the students to see the room," she said, "we didn't even have a rat to work | with." | Freeman and another psy- I ! choiogy major, William Reid, I first built a T-maze, that is the | important piece of equipment ! ! used for motivation and learn | ing studies. With the little grant money, I Mrs. Bonner purchased some ba sic equipment such as cages 1 and a few white mice for the experiments. "Their work didn't end with the organization of the lab," said Mrs. Bonner. "The animals have to be fed every day and 1 I have a full load and classes. Freeman and Reid Just pitched in and did that too." With her fabricated lab, Mrs. Bonner and her students have already completed one signifi cant piece of research in which they investigated pain as a mo tivational stimulus. The project was the outgrowth of an earlier project conducted by Mrs. Bonner with a Nation al Science Foundation grant. A&T has only offered a ma jor in psychology since 1967, and Mrs. Bonner feels that the growth from 20 majors to 100 means the program is now on its way. She talks now about putting the finishing touches on her laboratory. 'We need money to purchase a lot of basics," she said. "But I am optimistic because of the way these students have react ed." One of her problems has al ready been solved. Freeman and .eid have started breeding the rats. "At least we should have plenty of rats for the summer and fall program," she said.
