Avery Robinson, Pastor, officiating. Mrs. Aldridge was born in Randolph County Aprii 3, 1881 to the late Henry and Maggie MRS. ILA CLARK ALDRIDGE Clark and departed this life June 20, 1970 at L. Richardson Me morial Hospital. She was married to the late Mr. William T. Aldridge and to this union tour children were born, including two sons who preceded her in death. After moving with her family to Guilford County she joined Holmes Methodist Church where she remained, until later years moving her membership to High Street Methodist Church, now Union Memorial United Metho dist Church. She was a loyal and faithful member as long as her health permitted her to attend. She is survived by two daugh ters, Mrs. Mable Watson of the j home, and Mrs. Pearl Lee of Thiells, New York; three grand | children, Mrs. Alta Holiday, Mrs. Bettie Thompson and Mrs. Ma rion Hooper; great-grandchil dren, Mr. Wilbur Aldridge, Pa tricia Hill and Andrew Thomp son. A&T RECEIVES $147,000 GRANT TO ESTABLISH TRANSPORT INSTITUTE By Richard E. Moore GREENSBORO, N. C.? A&T State University has received a $147,972 grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation to establish an institute for research and teaching of a number of problems related to urban trans portation. According to Dr. Reginald Armory, dean of the A&T School of Engineering, the project will be conducted on an interdis ciplinary basis, the departments of economics and architectural engineering and the Division of Business. Dr. Amory and Dr. Evans, acting head of the Department of Economics, will serve as co directors of the proposed Trans portation Institute. "Although our focus will be on the study of transportation problems in the cities,' said Amory, "we shall also train un dergraduates in the critical area of transportation." Amory said that by making students aware of the scale of problems involved in transpor tation, more of them will be at tracted into transportation re lated agencies and industries. Besides offering undergrad training, Amory said the new Transportation Institute will serve as a regional center for elected officials, community leaders, as well as local and state engineers, architects, plan ners and other professionals. "We hope to offer short cours es, colloquia and workshops de signed to provide instruction In current techniques and concepts in transportation," added Amory. One of the problems already being studied by Dr. Jan Stulin sky, an engineering professor at A&T, is the feasibility of the use of "earless and limited" traffic in residential and downtown areas. "Cities today are not cities for humans,' said Stulinsky. "They are cities for cars.' Other institute faculty mem bers will be Anwar Kahn, Dr. Alice E. Kidder, Howard F. Robinson, Dr. Florentine V. Sow ell, William A. Streat, Jr. PRINCESS PAGEANT Mrs. Frances L. Enzlow has announced that the Western North Carolina Conference of the A. M. E. Church is meeting at St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sun day, June 28, at 8:00 p. m. The occasion being the Young Peo ple's Department Annual Prin cess Contest. The Y. P. D. Pageant is hon-( oring Bishop and Mrs. George W. Baber and Mrs. Mamie Aik ens, who is the Y.P.D. Connec tional Director. An enjoyable evening is plan ned with music, speeches, judg ing and the March of the 1970 Princess. WISE 616 Benbow Road 272-4023 Ward No. 4 Closes Fiscal Year With Successful Events Ward No. 4 of the United Institutional Bap tist Church ended the fiscal year with two suc cessful events. In May the Ward sponsored a King and Queen contest. Mr. E. R. Jones, leader of Ward No. 4, was crowned king by reporting a sum of $150.00. Mrs. Sarah Lowe, a loyal and faithful member of the ward, was crowned Queen. She reported $230. Mrs. Rosa Lee Mitchell was runner-up with $2X5.00. Last year's queen, Mrs. Carrie Coin crown ed the new queen. In June the ward sponsored its annual Baby Contest. The contest culminated on Sunday, June 21, 1970 at the home of Mr. Si Mrs. Archie Ander son, 818 Logan Street. Baby Cherisa Smith, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Bill Smith, was first place winner with a total of $255.13. Her sponsors were Mrs. Julia Moore and Mr. Wesley Clark. Second place winner was Baby Sylvia More head, daughter of Mrs. Bernice Morehead. She re ported $189.00 Her sponsors were Mrs. Alice Mur chison and Mrs. Minnie Ordley. Baby Buriey Spinks, Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. Burley Spinks, was third place winner by report ing ?173.00 His sponsors were Mrs. Florence Tucker Mrs. Sarah Lowe, and Mrs. Wallace. Fourth place winner was Baby Ramon Le Grand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond LeGr&nd. He reported $130.00. His sponsors were Miss Delols Lindsay and Mrs. Mattie Lindsay and Mr. E. R. Jones. These two contests enabled the ward to meet its quota for the year. We thank all of our members and friends for their loyal support and contribu tions.
