A&T RECEIVES $147,000 GRANT TO
ESTABLISH TRANSPORT INSTITUTE
By Richard E. Moore
GREENSBORO, N. C.? A&T
State University has received a
$147,972 grant from the U. S.
Department of Transportation to
establish an institute for research
and teaching of a number of
problems related to urban trans
portation.
According to Dr. Reginald
Armory, dean of the A&T School
of Engineering, the project will
be conducted on an interdis
ciplinary basis, the departments
of economics and architectural
engineering and the Division of
Business.
Dr. Amory and Dr. Evans,
acting head of the Department
of Economics, will serve as co
directors of the proposed Trans
portation Institute.
"Although our focus will be
on the study of transportation
problems in the cities,' said
Amory, "we shall also train un
dergraduates in the critical area
of transportation."
Amory said that by making
students aware of the scale of
problems involved in transpor
tation, more of them will be at
tracted into transportation re
lated agencies and industries.
Besides offering undergrad
training, Amory said the new
Transportation Institute will
serve as a regional center for
elected officials, community
leaders, as well as local and
state engineers, architects, plan
ners and other professionals.
"We hope to offer short cours
es, colloquia and workshops de
signed to provide instruction In
current techniques and concepts
in transportation," added Amory.
One of the problems already
being studied by Dr. Jan Stulin
sky, an engineering professor at
A&T, is the feasibility of the use
of "earless and limited" traffic
in residential and downtown
areas.
"Cities today are not cities
for humans,' said Stulinsky.
"They are cities for cars.'
Other institute faculty mem
bers will be Anwar Kahn, Dr.
