Middleton Dazzles Sports Writers Quarterback Charles Middle ton's sterling play for A&T against Southern last Friday in Yankee Stadium had the New York sports writers comparing him with Fran Tarkenton of the pros. But Middleton. being the level-headed guy that he is, shook off the praise by saying, "I simply wasn't satisfied with myself." "I wasn't satisfied with my passing," he added, "and I wasn't satisfied with the score." The Aggies lost the game, 21-6, but quarterback Middleton was easily the outstanding player of the field. He will lead the Ag gies against S. C. State in the first annual Sickle Cell Classic in Winston-Salem's Groves Sta dium on Saturday. Taking advantage of a num ber of busted plays, against Southern, Middleton zigged and zagged his way to the game's high of 85 yards in 13 carries. He scored the Aggies' only touchdown the third quarter on an eight-yard run, and added 99 more yards by passing. "It's a nice idea to be men tioned in the same breath with Tarkenton," said Middleton, but actually, I run because I have to." The youngster, who hails from Hopkins, S. C. is concerned now with improving his passing game. In high school it was the other way around. A&T recruit ed him after he had thrown 42 touchdown passes his final two seasons. "I learned to run some last year by playing behind Stanley Jacobs," he added. '"Playing be hind a fine passer like that, I had to learn to do something else." "I don't feel that being known as a runner or scrambler will hurt me any," said Middleton. "When I get my passing game really going, there are going to be some more surprises." Middleton's coaches like him the way he is. "He has quick feet and he's beginning to learn overall knowledge of the game," said Willie Jeffries, A&Ts in W elcome College Students University Dairy Bar 1410 E. Market St. Phone 274-9515 terim coach. "He's going to come around as a passer." Meanwhile, Middleton will probably keep on scrambling for yardage and touchdowns, doing what comes naturally.
