It is no new thing for a man to seek to silence his conscience. The Christian as the conscience of the community must be ex posed to the dislike, the hatred, Mrs. Ruth Herring 512 B W. The inevitability of persecu tion ? or being at odds with society ? rings in both passages of Scripture in this lesson. On this point Jesus was al most brutally honest. He mad* it clear that following him neces sarily involved taking up a cross. (See Mark 8:34.) The day was to come when Christians would even be told of the "blessed ness" of persecution. Indeed, throughout the New Testament we sense a conviction that when one suffers for the faith, one shares in the sufferings ol Christ. Critical Lovers How about the Savior in this dilemma? Shall we call him a "critical lover"? What does he expect of his followers? The question then becomes: Are we ready for critical lovers? Can we be told about our pre judices without firing back, "Communist" or starting a whisper campaign? Dare we be lieve that many who question the nature of our involvement in Vietnam may be very loyal Americans? Are we willing to hear what is wrong with the church ? even from someone with long hair? I believe that the greatest challenge facing Christians to day is not, Will you stand up for what you believe? Rather, I think the question is, Will you be persecuted for righteousness* sake? Father, keep us on the grow ing edge of life. May we wel come the challenge of new days and new ways, thankful for the struggles that sometimes burn but ultimately bless or lives. Redeem us from our enslave ment to fear and free us for service in thy name. Amen. WANTED 100 BOYS TO SELL Prizes will be given each month to the boy who sells the most papers.
