Mr. Lawrence W. Rogers, superintendent
of buildings and
grounds at Bennett College, died
Sunday, Jan. 9th in L. Richardson
Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held
4:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13th
in St. Matthews United Methodist
Church. Burial followed in
Maplewood Cemetery.
Mr. Rogers had been a member
of the college staff for 40
years and with his staff helped
build Thirkied Gymnasium,
Black, Merner, Barge and Reynolds
Halls, the Pfeiffer Chapel,
Holgate Library, Pfeiffer Heating
Plant and David O. Jones
Student Union.
At the time of his death, Mr.
Rogers lived with his daughter
'and her husband, James J. Scarlette,
college business manager
at 1216 Eastside Dr.
Survivors are daughter, Mrs.
Mary Ann Scarlette, assistant
director of teacher education and
coordinator of elementary education
at Bennett College; bro

in Chapel Hill, N. C. The eight
year old boy was struck by a
truck while crossing a street on
his bicycle on Saturday, Jan. 8
and was dead on arrival at
Moses Cone Hospital.
According to Greensvoro police
reports, the accident occurred
about 10:35 a.m. on Arlington
Street at the intersection
with East Whittington.

driven by Curtis Walter Stephens
of Browns Summit, had just
crossed through the intersection
when it struck the Newman boy
crossing Arlington Street on his
bicycle, reports said.
Police indicated that Stephens
was driving his truck at about
25 miles per hour in the 35-mileper-hour
zone. There were no
charges filed in the accident.
Survivors in addition to the
parents are sisters, Mattie Lee
and Althea Newman and brother,
Jessie Ray Newman, all of
the home; maternal grandmother
and stepgrandfather, Mr. and
Mrs. Woodrow McRay of
Greensboro; aunts and uncles
and a host of other relatives and
friends.

Jan. 8, 1972 at 6:00 p.m. in the
YMCA Gymnasium.
All present paid tribute to
Mr. David Washington Morehead,
Executive Director from
1945 to 1971, more than a quarter
ux a vemury.
He is a native of Greensboro,
a graduate of Dudley High
School and North Carolina A&T
State University. In his church,
he has been a prominent lay
leader ... in Greensboro and
beyond. He is a member of Phi
Beta Sigma Fraternity and a
32nd Degree Mason.
He has been an active mem,ber
of A&T University's Board
of Trustees and Chairman of its
Building and Grounds Committee,
member of the University's
National Alumni Association Executive
Committee, member of
the Advisory Committee of the
American Federal Savings and
Loan Association. He has served
on the Executive Board of the
National Conference of Christians
and Jews, Greensboro's Human
Relations Sub-Committee
