THE ALLEGHANY TIMES — . --*-*■*- ' I Published Every Thursday $1.50 Per Year ______S Entered as second-class matter at the Post Office at Sparta, N. C. D. C. SHORES, Editor The Governor of our State advises i sales tax. We are not opposed to his advice, but on the other hand we are anxious to co-operate in every particular with him, however, we trust there can be some other way out for North Carolina. Put A Dollar To Work A dollar spent now for the con struction or maintenance of proper ty is in for a very busy time. It enters the pocket of the work man on the job. It goes to the local dealer who sells the supplies, and materials. It passes through the hands of the transportation com panies that brings them to you. It visits the related concerns selling raw materials and basic supplies. It goes to the government in taxes and to the investor in the form of divi dends ahd finally it starts the cycle all over again when someone else uses it for improvement and gets it Into circulation. The little dollar has an amazing purchasing power at this time too. It will buy more lumber, more paint and more supplies and more labor than it has for a great number of years. It will give you a chance to improve and increase the value of your property at rock-bottom prices. If you keep it in hiding, it is worth less. Only by taking it out and put ting it to work can you' and others gain its potential benefits. Jobs are cheaper and better than charity. Without jobs there won’t be money for charity, ■ so put your dollar to work and help alleviate distress and stay with the American movement to step on depresssion. Is It Economy? The Board of County Commission ers have safe-guarded the county af fairs and we have a county govern ment second to none. For this fact we are not only proud of our noble board but we stand ready to co-oper ate in every way with their ideas of county government, but the question of using the old walls of the court hose to tie a new wall to in the con struction of a new building, does not seem to us as being the economical thing to do. Of course, the board has been advised by one of the best ercliitects in the State that the walls are sound enough to tie the new walls to and the advice of this architect should be worth far more than the advise of one who is not experienced in this particular line. We base our ideas on the fact that the heat from the interior of the building could cause the inside portion of the walls to become so hot that the expansion would break all bonds with the outer portion of the walls and probably leave the out er wall in perfect shape but with only the strength of the outer layer of brick and that since the inner bonds have been broken, the present walls will not be sufficient to hold the weight of the building. At least, where the new walls will be tied to the old. it will leave a very bad. ap pearance if the advice of the archi tect is true. We are inclined to believe that for a few dollars more a new court house from the foundation up would suit those who are going to be taxed to pay the bill, better than take chances on the old walls and in the end everyone would be better satis fied. The question that we would like to bring to the minds of the tax payers and citizens, of A'leghany county is, “Is it Economical to use these walls?
