Miss Doris Hackler is at home from N. C. C. W. for the summer. Dr. and Mrs. T. R. Burgiss spent Wednesday in Winston-Salem. Miss Hazel Roberts, of Roaring Gap, spent last week in Pinehurst, the guest of Miss Irene Maples. Mr. and Mrs. G. Glenn Nichois spent Sunday with relatives at Pi per’s Gap, Virginia. Hon. and Mrs. R. L. Doughton were visitors in town during the week-end. Miss Clyde Fields, who has been teaching in Statesville, is spending some time with her family. Mr. Claude Doughton, of North Wilkesboro, was a visitor in town Sunday. Miss Jean Hawthorne spent last week-end with her sister, Mrs. Bob Woods, in Pearisburg, Va. Miss Susie Thomas left Tuesday to visit friends and relatives in Richmond, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Wagoner, of Winston-Salem, were visitors in town last week-end. Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Ayers and children, of Boone, spent the week end here with relatives. Mrs. W. E. Cox is recovering from a very painful injury which she re ceived from a recent fall. Mrs. Frank L. Sanders, of Chil howie, Va., has returned home after visiting her sister, Mrs. John M. Cheek. Mrs. J. H. Doughton and son, Bobby, of Statesville, are spending some time at their summer home in Sparta. Mrs. C. W. Higgins, who recently underwent an operation at the Jeff erson hospital in Roanoke, is im proving rapidly. Mrs. Grace Holcombe, of Okeene, Olkahoma, is spending some time with her father, W. R. Gentry, who is seriously 111. Mrs. A. V. Choate, Miss Blanch Pugh, Garnett Edwards and T. R. Franklin attended an extention class at Wilkesboro Saturday. Mr. F. H. Jackson left Tuesday to make a business trip, to Richmond and visit home-folks near Harrison burg, Va. Mrs. R. A. Doughton, Mrs. R. E. Hawthorne and Mrs. Frank Sanders, of Chilhowie, Va., visited friends in Jefferson last Saturday. Mrs. John M. Cheek, who recently underwent an operation in Winston Salem has returned home and is im proving nicely. Carlos Lee Mitchell, of Piney Creek and Miss Mary Phipps, of In dependence, Va., were married Wed nesday at the Methodist parsonage in Sparta. Sparta ball team lost to Scotts ville Saturday by a score of 7 to 14. Several of the regular players were not there and an emergency team was used. Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Thompson, Messrs. Floyd Crouse^ F. H. Jackson and Herbert Estep spent the week end in Rural Retreat, Va., guests of Miss Elizabeth Lambert. r Misses Alma Irwin, Hazel Burch ette, Mils,. Cecil B|umgarner, Mrs. Beulah Hamilton and Mr. DeLos Un derwood spent the past week-end in Asheville. ^SOCIETY., U. D. C. Meeting On last Thursday, May 25th, a meeting of the U. D. C. Chapters was held at Sparta. The business meeting was conducted in the high school auditorium which was decor ated with rhododendron, mountain laurel and azalea. The program was opened with the song, “America the Beautiful,” by the audience, and the invocation by Miss Lucy Finley, of Boone. A welcome address was splendidly given by the local Presi dent, Mrs. Vance Choate and a res ponse was given by Mrs. D. C. Hick man. Miss Margaret Cheek rendered a vocal solo, “Sundown”, which was followed by inspiring addresses by Mrs. Woodward, State President of U. D. C., and Mrs. Daniels, State Sec retary. The minutes were read by Mrs. Coffey, of Boone. After the program the ladies were invited to the library where a lovely three course luncheon was served. During the luncheon speeches were made by several visitors and Gov. R. A. Doughton, honor guest, made a de lightful talk. Ladies present from the communi ty and serving luncheon were: Mes daines R. L. Doughton, R. A. Dough ton, R, E. Hawthorne, Dalton War ren, Cloy Winkler, Finis Wagoner, W. B. Reeves, J. C. Fields, A. V. Choate, J. T. Carson, George Carson, Edwin Hale, Elizabeth Moxley, Lola White, C. A. Reeves, T. R. Burgiss and Misses Clyde Fields, Ivy Grace Doughton, Margaret Cheek and Pearl Fields. Guests who attended the meeting were from the following places: Boone, Granite Falls, Wilson, Greensboro, Morganton, Wilkesboro and Old Fort. The next district meeting will be held in Boone. Missionary Society Meets Mrs. Sidney Gambill was hostess to the Ladies’ Missionary Society at her home Friday afternoon. A large number of the members were in at tendance and heard the interesting and inspiring talk made by Mrs. Armbrust. Plans were made to clothe the little child at the Child ren’s Home that was adopted by the Society. Mrs. Dalton Warren had charge of the study topic and a lit tle dialogue was given by some of the members. The June meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Dalton Warren, with Mrs. Ad Mc Millan as leader. At the conclusion of the meeting the hostess served a delicious salad course. Cox’s Chapel The Epworth League gave an in teresting program Sunday night, May 28. Mrs. Hoyt Cox was leader and many were present. The Sunday school shows by the good attendance that excellent work is being carried out. We have 80 on roll. On June 18, at 10:00 o’clock we will present a program “Honoring Motherhood and Fatherhood.” Ev eryone is invited. Mrs. Howard Kennedy was carried to the Elkin hospital yesterday for treatment for anemia. She was ac companied by her husband, Howard Kennedy, her mother, Mrs. Walter Young, of Volney, Va.: Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Walls: her two brothers, Clinton and Harry Young and two cousins, Earl and Burton Osborne. Misses Willie and Mabel Osborne were guests of their grandmother, Mrs. Jincy Osborne, over the week end. Mr. Burton Osborne was a dinner guest of Avery Neaves, Elkin, N. C., Sunday, May 28. A large crowd enjoyed the ser mon, “Heaven”, by Rev. C. W. Rus sell Sunday, May 28. Fred and Burton Osborne were business visitors in Elkin last week. Mrs. Lay Phipps has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Z. F. Ward the last week. Z. F. Ward and E. P. Osborne were business visitors in Indepen dence, May 29. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Osborne were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Pres ton Osborne Sunday. Mrs. Emma Cox has returned home from the Marion hospital, and is getting along fine. Stratford News Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Billings, of Piney Creek announce the arrival of a daughter on May 19. We were very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Jim Kennedy, who died Tuesday, May 23, and was bur ied Thursday, May 25, at Turkey Knob cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss five children, three sisters, two brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. Revs. Tolliver and Hoppers conducted funeral services. Mrs. Howard Kennedy, who has been ill for a few weeks, was taken to the hospital at Elkin on May 28. Mrs. J. F. McMillan, of Landen burg, Penna., is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John nie Evans, of Piney Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Delp and Robert Delp, of Piney Creek, spent Saturday and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Delp. Mr. and Mrs. Hassy Lee Young spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mrs. Young’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Osborne. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Delp spent the week-end with their grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Petty. Mr. Jess Osborne and daughter, Mrs. Harry Lee Young, were shop ping in Sparta Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Delp and son, Arnold, spent Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Delp. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Joines and family have returned to Stratford to spend their summer vacation. Mr. Joines is superintendent of the high school at East Bend, N. C. Maple Shade News Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Cox visited their daughter, Mrs. Kyle McMillan at Galax, Sunday. Mrs. Mayme Delp, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Delp, Mrs. L. C. Del]i, Mrs. G. W. Kirk, Mrs. Clyde Louthian, Win nie IJash, Kathleen Louthian and Grace Kirk attended the funeral of Mrs. Mayme Delp’s sister, Mrs. James Kennedy, at Turkey Knob, Wednes day. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Halsey and children visited Mrs. Halsey’s moth er, Mrs. Isom Hash, at Oak Hill, last week. Mrs. Lester Delp and children, Valgene and Curtis Dale, of Galax, spent the past week at the home of Mr. Alex Delp. A group of young people, includ ing Elvfra and Everet Crouse, of Shiloh church, attended church ser vices and the baptizing at Potato Creek church Sunday. Mrs. Ira Halsey, an aged 'Woman of the community, is very ill. Rev. C. W. Russell filled his reg- 1 ular appointment at Potato Creek church Sunday afternoon.
