County Nerts oflhe Week LITTLE PINE NEWS Miss Amolee Jordan was visitng her sister at Roaring Gap last week. Mr. Rhudy Lowe spent last Mon day night with his uncle, Mr. I. M. Chek. Misses Reva and Clela Green, Zola Cheek, Mr. Herbert Royal, Carlyle Lowe and Earle Smith motored to Roaring Gap Sunday. Miss Sadie Harris and Mr. Geral dine Evans motored to Twin Oaks Saturday afternoon. Mr. Fred Harris and family, and Mr. Raymond Hills were visiting Mr. Clark Sheets near Stratford last Sun day. People of this community were sor ry to hear of the death of Mrs. Wat son Lowe. Mrs. Thompson and son, of Ashe County, are visiting Mrs. Everett Handy. Mrs. Everett Handy spent last Monday with Mrs. Fred Handy. Mr. Raymond Mountain called on H. M. Harris Saturday night. Mrs. Hutcheson, who has been for some time with her sisters, Mrs. Neal Hendrix and Miss Clyde Joines, has returned to her home. Raymond and Fred Hills and Ev erett Handy attended the ball game at Cherry lane Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harris spent Saturday night with Mrs. Alice Smith at Roaring Gap. COX’S CHAPEL NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Bob Walls, Mrs. De Ette Halsey and Mr. Worth Howard made a business trip to Elkin August 5th. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Osborne and son, Paul, and Miss Willa Osborne made a business trip to Galax Sat urday. They also visited Mr. Jones Wingates, of Independence for a lit tle while. Mrs. Burton Osborne, who has been visiting her father, S. O. Gam bill, the past week, returned home Saturday. Mrs. Jincy Osborne was a guest of Mrs. Z. F. Ward Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Burton Osborne call ed to see Mr. and Mrs. Bob Walls Sunday afternoon. Mr. Troy Cox was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Ben H. Phipps, of Bridle Creek this week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Preston Osborne and daughter, Zenna, and son, Oscar, were visiting at the home of Mrs. Jincy Osborne Tuesday. Z. F. Ward and Munsey Cox made a business trip to Independence Thursday. The revival meeting will begin Monday night, August 7. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Black attended the funeral services of Mr. Jack Phipps, Fox, Va., Sunday, after which they called to see Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Osborne. Several from this community are going to White Top and Mt. Rogers this week on a camping trip, and to the music festival. FURCHES NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Richardson and daughter spent the week-end at H. L. Jones. Mrs. Will Church, who has been spending some time with her father, J. A. Irwin, has returned to hr home''. It is the regular meeting at Pra ther’s Creek Saturday and Sunday. Decoration services will be «t-10 A. M. Sunday. A birthday dinner was given to Mrs. Carl Taylori Sunday. About 75 of her friends and relatives were present. All reported a good time. Everett Caudill spent Saturday af ternoon at Scottsville. We are sorry to say that Mr. John Tucker, who has “ been ill for two weeks, does not improve. Mrs. Hattie Petty visited her fath er, F. G. Brockings during the week end. GLADE VALLEY NEWS The commencement of the Daily Vacation Bible School was held last Friday morning. The program con sisted of songs, memory verse from the Bible and short stories told by the children. Each department had on display the art handwork which was very attractive. The Intermed iate girls pieced a quilt top which they challenged the ladies of the Auxiliary to complete for Barium Springs Orphanage. The boys under the direction of Rev. Marshall made models of ocean liners, which were very good and models gave evidence of much work. The Bible School was very successful and the children were greatly benefited by the ten days training. Miss Mabel Todd of Elk Creek, Va. is spending some time with friends and relatives in this vicinity. Mrs. Ruth Park and son, Nelson, of Winston-Salem, are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Eldridge. Rev. O. W. Marshall is conducting revival services at Rocky Ridge Presbyterian Church this week. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pugh passed through Glade Valley on Monday en route to their home in Ohio. LAUREL SPRINGS NEWS Mrs. Tom King of Washington, who is visiting her mother, at Whitehead, visited Mrs. Carolyn Taylor of Lau rel Springs Saturday. Miss Blanche Billings underwent an operation Friday morning and is reported to be doing nicely. Several from Laurel Springs, in cluding Mr. and Mrs. John Pugh, Miss Blanche Pugh, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pugh, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Pugh, Mrs. Sol Upchurch, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Fender and little daughter, Thelma, attended a pounding for Mr. and Mrs. Benfield, the Methodist minister who is moving into the new parsonage this week. Mrs. Eugene Sheppard, Miss Blanch Pugh, and Robert Taylor attended the teachers’ meeting at Boone Mon day. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Richardson and Miss Shores, of Sparta, were visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Fender Sunday evening. The ball game Saturday was play ed between Sparta and Laurel Springs, with a score of 6 to 7 in favor of Sparta. The next game will be at Laurel Springs Saturday be tween Grassy Creek and Laurel Springs. Mr. Lester Waddell and Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Fender spent a few hours in Baltimore last week. Edwards Crossroad News We are having some good showers. Farmers are beginning to plow for small grain. Mrs. W. G. Lanier visited at W. H. Handy’s last week. Virley Rector is visiting his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Mart Rec tor. Roy Rector, of Galax, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Rector, Saturday. Mr. Will Reeves and family, of Whitehead, visited in this community Sunday. Rev. W. H. Handy and family and Mrs. W, G. Lanier attended the de coration at New Haven last Sunday. A large crowd attended. Last Sunday night there was preaching and singing at Zion school house near Edwards Crossroads. The ministers present were: W. H. Handy, W. M. Moxley, Carlton Sparks, and J. A. Reed. The singing choir from New Haven, with Garnett Sexton as leader, came to Zion. The singing was enjoyed by a house full of peo ple. Elder J. A. Reed preached a fine sermon for the people. Elder W. H. Handy will preach at Pine Church Sunday. PINEY CREEK NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Carey Wagoner and daughter, Betty Mae, were Sunday evening visitors of John C. Halsey. Mr. Hal Halsey, Galax, is spending a fw days at home. He is recoverng after a recent illness of diptheria. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Grubbs and lit tle daughter, Magnolia, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Weaver and children, and Mrs. A. M. Edwards, Galax, Mr. Virge Pierce, Crumpler, and Misses Verna and Eula Parsons were dinner guests of Mrs. Mae Halsey Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Halsey, Nan cy and Mattie Halsey were visitors in Sparta Saturday. Mr. R. E. Black and several of the agriculture boys have gone to White Lake on a camping trip. Miss Lillian Halsey returned to Roanoke last week after spending her vacation at home. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Parsons spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Cau dill. Piney Creek Route 1 News (BY WILMA CROUSE.) Rev. and Mrs. W. N. Parker have returned to their home in Dryden, Va., after spending a few days with Mrs. A. J. Ward. Mr. and Mrs. Carlis Lee Mitchell spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Preston Phipps near Indepen dence. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Mitchell, of Darlington, Md., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Mitchell. Hobert Crouse visited at Mr. Z. F. Ward’s last week. Mrs. Carrie Phipps and son, Hor ton Mack, of Cox’s Chapel, are visit ing at S. M. Mitchell. Harold and Louise Mitchell are spending this week with the Y. T. H. F.’s at White Lake. The Children’s Day program was jiven at Walnut Branch Sunday. Those present from outside the com munity were: Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Mitchell, of Darlington, Md., Mrs. Carrie Phipps and son, Horton Mack, of Cox’s Chapel, Rev and Mrs. C. W. Phipps, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Phipps, and Claude Phipps, of Turkey Knob. WHITEHEAD NEWS Mrs. John Joines and children, of Wilkes county, spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Ed wards. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Cleary visited at T. A. Edwards Sunday. Misses Hazel and Zora Joines spent Sunday with Misses Boyde and Gene Cleary. TURKEY KNOB NEWS Mrs. Charles Gibson and daughter, Edna, spent a few days last week with her aunt, Mrs. Ollie Blevins. Mr. and Mrs. John Delp and chil dren, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Delp ana children, and Mr. Glenn Delp spent Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Luthei j Delp. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. MAPLE SHADE NEWS Mrs. Emmett Hash and son, Hill ary, of Pine Branch, visited Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Halsey Wednesday. Winnie Hash and Grace Kirk made a business trip to Independence Fri day. Mrs. Virgil Cox attended the meet ing of the Missionary Society of OaK Hill church, Friday. Mrs. Joe Trent and daughters, ol Independence, have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. James Halsey. Nina Halsey and Winnie Hash spent Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Hash at Pine Branch. Dock Gwaltney and Bill Halsey made a business trip to West Vir ginia last week. A number of people from the com munity atended the negro meeting on Iron Mountain Sunday. Mrs. Virgil Cox conducted a Lay man’s meeting at Walnut Branch Sunday. STRATFORD NEWS Mrs. H. D. Estep is seriously ill. Misses Mamie and Madeline San ders are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Gwaltney, of Piney Creek. Saturday night Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Edwards gave their young friends a very delightful social. Music was fur nished by Henry Whitter, Paul Miles, Floyd McCann, Hubert Sanders, Fred Weaver, and Glenn Sheppard. All reported a very enjoyable evening. Mrs. S. Jane Sanders, Mrs. Laura Edwards, and Mrs. W. G. Richardson, accompanied by Johnson Sanders, went to Elkin Saturday to see Mrs. Lester - Irwin who has been in the hospital there for several weeks. They reported Mrs. Irwin much im proved. Mr. and Mrs.J. F. Atwood and family, Mr. and Mrs. Will Atwood' and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kilby At wood and family, Wr. L. Irwin and a: number of their young friends spent Friday night at Earl Farmers’ fish ing camp. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Crouse an nounce the arrival of a baby girl. A report from Walnut Branch sec tion says that R. B. Vanhop “has two acres of corn 14 feet tall, and Mrs. Geary Jones has two rows of sun flowers which are now 15 fet tall. Bruce Williams and Talmadge Pt ty have gone to Maryland to work. Mrs. Cynthia Fender, who has been visiting her parnts, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Cox, for a few days, returned to her home in Maryland last week. Shiloh Epworth League is pro gressing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Richardson and family visited Joe Irwin Sunday. Mr. Edgar Williams, Mrs. Zula Wil liams, and others visited Willmar Woodruff. Mrs. John Tolliver and Maggie visited Lloyd Absher Suday. Mrs. H. D. Estep is not improving, we are sorry to say. Mr. Guy Richardson is able to be out again. Mr. Isom Rynolds and family went to Mr. Taylors to a birthday dinner Sunday. Joe Irwin is getting along as well is usual, somtimes btter and some times worse. We had a hard rain last Thursday on Peach Bottom. The men are busy mowing now. It is fine growing weather now. Mrs. Charles Sanders went to Hoo ker last week. Mr. A. O. Joines and Mrs. Ennis Spurlin visited at Mr. H. D. Estep’s Saturday afternoon. MOUNT ZION NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Ray V. Shepherd spent Friday night and Saturday at H. Clay Smith’s. Mrs. Mattie Smith spent a few days last week with relatives near Irvin Grocery. Bennie Van Dyke, of Peden. spent Saturday with Howard Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jenkins, of Winston-Salem, spent last week-end with Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Landreth. Billy, Vern, and Julia Shepherd spent Saturday with Edna Rae and How ard Smith. S. E. Smith and son, Thomas, visited at A. L. Mabe’s Sat urday. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Black and family spent Saturday with Mr. Black’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Black. Mrs. O. E. Moxley visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Black, Sat urday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray V. Shep herd and children, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Clay Smith and children took din ner Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Geo. F. Smith. Miss Powell of Raleigh, is visiting Miss Ruth Black. Mrs. Fred Sharpe and little daugh ter visited at Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Jones a few days last week. Mr. A. L. Mabe continues to improve. Mr. and Mrs. Ray V. Shepherd and chil dren took dinner at W. R. Jones Sun day, and were at W. F. Pugh’s for supper. Several people turned out to hear Rev. Benfield Sunday. He ' preached a very interesting sermon. Mrs. Maggie Smith of Nathan’s Creek, visited Mrs. Rebecca Smith Sunday. Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Benfield of Nathan’s Creek, took dinner at W. F. Pugh’s Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. H. Clay Smith and children, and Mr. and Mrs. George F. Smith visited at S. E. Smith’s Sunday. Claude, J. Smith visited at J. R. Cox’s, of Furches, Sunday. Mr. Allen Mabe sustained an injury to his foot one day last week. R. Lee Smith, of Dawson, Ala., is spending a few days with his mother, Mrs. Rebecca Smith, and his brother, S. E. Smith. Mr. Smith left this coun ty 11 years ago, and since that time has been cotton farming in Alabama. Mr. and Mrs. H. Clay Smith took dinner at W. F. Pugh’s Sunday. Paul and Woodrow Woodie, of Hickory, spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Woodie. Dr. and Mrs. E. D. Jones, of West Jefferson, spent Sunday with Mrs. Jones’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Marine Corps Has Openings for Hi School Grads The Savannah Marine Corps Re cruiting Station, located in the Post Office building will have vacancies for graduates of high school or from institutions of higher learning during the months of August and September according to an announcement by Liet. Col. A. B. Drum, Officer in Charge. Men accepted will be transferred to Parris Island, S. C., for a few weeks intensive training before being as signed to some school, ship or Mar ine Barracks for duty. The Marine Corps offers many edu cational advantages, both scholastic and scenic. Some men are selected for aviation, radio and clerical work up on completion of preliminary instruc tions. Many are assigned to ships and stations in the United States, and a few to foreign lands.
