It uses evil' as a means of preventing greater evil. Its purpose in punishing the guilty is the protection of the innocent. It deeply deplores the necessity for the infliction of punishment upon the guilty, but it does not forget their un fortunate victims and embraces within its protecting arms the innocent people who may yet become the victims of unpun ished crime. It restrains the liberty of the few offenders so that the many who do not offend may have a fuller enjoyment of their liberties. You are now soon to be cut off from life. Your days are num bered and soon for you the mystery of life will be merged in the mystery and majesty of death. Soon the greedy grave, whose hungry mouth is never filled, will claim you, and in the arms of the col<fc and silent earth you will be laid for your last, long sleep. Let me earnestly entreat you, therefore, as a dying sinner, to turn from all wicked thoughts; to ponder upon the error of your ways and with penitence and humiliation pray for mercy and pardon to that Omnipotent Com passionate, All-pitying Judge, the majesty of whose laws you have so grievously offended and in whose courts the only plea that will save the humblest as well as the most exalted from a worse fate than the death which awaits you will be a plea for mercy. The time may not yet be too late; and if so be, then it may be that He who visited the sick and those that were in prison; it may yet be that He who walked upon the crested waves of the sea, and commanded the winds to be still, and whispered “peace” to the troubled waters of Galilee, may whisper “peace” to your [troubled soul, and redeeming j grace may drop a tear of pity | upon your sins and blot them i out forever. God grant that it I may be so! Mr. Sheriff, in recognition of the majesty of the law and the divine attributes of justice, let all the people stand. Mir.
