Holder, Galax, Va., were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Blevins. Ralph Thomas Blevins is re covering from an attack of measles. Mrs. W. E. Hatcher, of Mt. Airy, formerly Miss Elizabeth Gambill, of this county, is j seriously ill in a Mt. Airy hospital. Rev. A. C. Gibbs, presiding elder of the Mt. Mrs. Emory Joines, who sus tained several broken ribs in a fall some time ago, is able to be out again. Dr. and Mrs. H. T. Smith and family, of Independence, were dinner guests Tuesday of Mrs. C- W. Higgins. Mrs. Rebecca Doughton is re ported to be seriously ill again. Miss Lambert's music class of Sparta high school will present its annual recital on Friday night, April 20, at 8 o’clock. Attorney K. r Crouse is act ing as prosecuting attorney, in the absence of Solicitor Carlyle Higgins, at Jefferson this week. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Gambill, Mrs. J. R. Gambill and Charlie Gambill, the latter of Bel Air, Md., were in Sparta Tuesday. Charlie Gambill has been away twenty-one years. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Miles and Ben Reeves accompanied Miss Irene Reeves to Greensboro, where she returned to school, Saturday. Mrs. Claude Moxley is improv ing after having ben ill for sev eral days. Myrtle Wooten is still ill with pneumonia. “Uncle Billie’’ Billings, one of the oldest men in the county and ■a Civil War veteran, is ill. Calvin Jones, son of Ruf Jones, has been confined to his bed for several days with inflamatory rheumatism. Vancine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Choate, is recovering from an attack of measles. Mrs. W. P. Irwin spent a few days this week with her daugh ter, Mrs. F. G. Richardson. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bumgarner visited relatives in North Wilkes boro the early part of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Muncy Crouse moved Tuesday to the residence next to the home of Clennel Rich ardson. DEATHS MRS. RUTH CALLOWAY Mrs. Ruth Calloway, widow of the late Jackson Calloway, died on Wednesday, April 4, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Hoppers, with whom she had made her home for several years. Mrs. Calloway was one of Alleghany county’s oldest residents, she be ing 99 years of age at the time of her death. No near relatives survive. The deceased was a member of Mt. Carmel church. Funeral services were conduct ed by the Rev. Mr. Handy and the Rev. Mir. Wyatt. Interment was in the Mt. Car mel cemetery.
