Report is that in all that vast auditorium no vacant seat was to be seen. From Mars Hill College Miss Marjorie McMillan and Miss Shir ley McMillan are home to spend the Christmas holidays. Paul Swanson has moved his office from the Transou Building to the room over the barber shop, opposite the Telephone office. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Shulken and family, of Townsend, Tenn., spent the week-end in Sparta and Glade v a«ey. Mrs. C. C. Castevens spent Tuesday in Galax. Mrs. Joe Caudill, of Twin Oaks, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia, is slowly improving. Mrs. Sarah Fender, of White head, is ill. Mrs. C. A. Dillard and sons, Chas. and Bobbie, are spending the holidays in Eckman, W. Va. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Kirk and daughter, Helen Emmett, of Rich Valley, Va., spent part of last week with Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Doughton. The death of Mrs. Will Taylor of North Wilkesboro occurred last week. She lived only a few days after a stroke of paralysis. Her husband, Dr. Will Taylor, is a native of this county, and lived at Laurel Springs. His sister, Mrs. Robert Fender, teaches in the local High school. Rev. C. H. McKnight of Inde pendence, was a week-end guest of his daughter, Mrs. Bower Hop pers. Mrs. J. T. Fender sustained a fractured arm in an accident at her home last week. Mrs. W. P. Maxwell has return ed from Duke Hospital where she went for medical treatment. She was accompained by Mr. Maxwell. Tar Heels May Reach 33,811 By March North Carolina will furnish ap proximately 33,811. native sons for the regular enlistments of the army, navy and marine corps by the end of the year closing on March 1, the War Department re vealed last week. Basing these figures on actual enrollment and anticipated in creases, army officers estimate that by March 1, North Carolina will have sent 21,696 men into the army, 9,945 into the navy and 2,170 into the marine corps during the 12-month period. After the first of the year se lective service inductions of North Carolinians is expected to be step ped up. It is estimated that the average induction will reach 3000 a month between January and April. The present national goal of 800,000 is due to be attained by July 1, after which the corps areas will start planning replace ments for men who will complete the year’s training. Brown attended church at White Plains Sunday. Miss Edith Bryan spent Sunday night at home. Cherry Lane School will cele brate with a Christmas tree and program December 19th.
