Brief Review Of Slate, National And World News During The Past Week AMERICAN WOMAN DELIVERS BOMBER London—Jacqueline Cochran de livered an American-built Hudson bomber to Great Britain Friday as the first woman transatlantic bomber pilot and at once upset "the routine of silence clamped tdown by somber and careful Bri tish officials upon the ocean plane-ferrying flights. The 32-year-old American avi atrix, holder of many flying rec ords, wife of an American finan cial titan and a business woman berself, flew the bomber all the way without relief. Then she tried her best to co operate with officials of the min istry of aircraft production who strove to keep her transatlantic flight quiet. AMERICA RELEASES SWITZERLAND’S ASSETS Washington.—The treasury has * thawed” the frozen assets of ■Sweden and Switzer lad, indicat ing that the two countries had given assurances that their cre ■dits would not be used to the ad vantage of axis or axis-occupied nations. General licenses were issued exempting Swiss and Swedish funds from President Roosevelt’s order of last Saturday which tied up approximately $2,500,000,000 of German and Italian funds and property and the American hold ings of a number of other coun tries. The aim of the order was to prevent the use of such capital for purposes harmful to this na tion and the objectives of its for eign policy. Release of the Swiss holdings, sources here said, involved ap proximately. $1,400,000,000. Fig ures on Swedish credits in the United States were not available. PROPOSED INCOME TAX MEANS BIG INCREASE Washington. — The American wage earner would pay approxi mately twice as much in income taxes next year under a broad tax plan tentatively approved by I the house ways and means com mittee. The * plan also provides for sharply increased excess profits charges and a special excess pro fits levy of 10 per cent to reach profits on war contracts. These proposed boosts are cal culated to yield $2,480,900,000. The administration proposes to raise a total of $3,500,000,000 un der the national defense revenue program. The difference between the two figures would come from increases in excise taxes and from estate and gift taxes. HOUSE APPROVES OF FUNDS FOR PARKWAY . As originally approved by the house, the bill appropriated $6,- < 000,000 for the parkways to cover previous contract authorizations. Of this amount, $4,500,000 had been obligated. The senate approved this am ount and in addition authorized the park service to contract for $6,000,000 in new work. The Blue Ridge parkway con nects the Shenandoah park and the Great Smoky park in North Carolina and Tennessee. The Nat chez Trace will extend from Ten nessee through Alabama to Miss issippi. SENATOR PAT HARRISON DIED EARLY SUNDAY A. M. Washington. — Senator Byron (Pat) Harrison (D), Miss., presi dent protempore of the Senate and chairman of its powerful fi nance committee died here early Sunday from exhaustion follow ing a major intestinal operation performed a week ago. Death came to the 59-year-old Democratic statesman—affection ately termed the * Gray Fox” and “Senate Gadfly”—at 6:35 a. m., as he rounded out 30 years of ser vice in the national legislature. His body was sent to Gulfport, Miss., on Tuesday for burial on Wednesday. The U. S. Department of Com merce has ceased publication of statistical information on exports of American farm produce and will keep such information secret because of the war. It is now estimated that the world cotton crop for the 1940 41 season will be approximately 29.700.000 bales produced on 75, 500.000 acres. Germany Has Declared War On Russia: Soviet Invaded Adolf Hitler, after assailing so viet Russia bitterly in a procla mauon react 10 ine worm uy ra dio at dawn Sunday, ordered the nazi armies to march into the so viet. The German fuehrer declared he had had enough of Russian violations of the German frontiers and had commended the fate of; the reich- to the armies which have been all-victorious since September, 1939. Propaganda Minister Paul Jos- ■ eph Goebbels read the proclama-1 tion and then Foreign Minister' Joachim von Ribbentrop came on the air to read out a formal dec laration of war against the nation with which Germany linked her self in a 10-year non-aggression pact less than two years ago. Hitler, in his proclamation, said it had been difficult for him to send an ambassador to Moscow in 1939 after the pact was signed and that it had been as hard to relinquish the Baltic states to the soviet in 1940. He accused the Russians of sending planes across the common \jrei riian-xxuissian iiumiu uu Uii t less times and said that the mo ment had arrived at last when Germany could no longer over look these developments. “Together with the Finns, the Germans are standing from Nar vik to the Carpathians,” the pro clamation said. This one sentence indicated per fectly how far-reaching is the new battle front—from Narvik, in far northern Norway, to the Carpa thian mountains on the Black sea, or more than 1,500 miles. The German proclamation end ed saying: “German, people, in this very moment a marching of the Ger man armies is taking place which has no precedent. * * * At the riv ers of the Danube to the shores pf the Black sea under (General ton) Antonescu, German and Ru manian soldiers are united, “The task is to safeguard Europe and thus save all. “I have therefore today decided ;o give the fate of the German Deople and the reich and of Eur )pe again into the hands of our ioldiers.” Wkilehead News Mr-.
