C, under the act of Cong- ress of March 3, 18l. Thursday, Feb. 11, 3909 v. Beautify the Court House . Grounds.! Spring is drawing near and with it comes the annual clean ing off of grounds preparatory to the planting of flowers and the beautifying of grounds wlr ch have lain dormant and unsightly during the cold winter months. Thousands who have visited Asheville, Hendersonville, Bilt more or other progressive towns surronnding us have noticed the well kept lawns and yards, the abundance of beautiful and sweet scented flowers trailing their way along fences, hedges and veran das' and have no doubt felt the joy and pleasure which such sur roundings must afford and which go far toward making life better. These scenes of beauty are only the result 'of effort in which all have an equal chance and all way. enjoy alike if they so desire Marshall has one of the most handsome court houses in the State, locateli a the heart of the town, and Atlie citizens? of " our , town and county should 'take a pride, int. , "We would suggest, theM)reJ thatf th$ tJommisslon,- i': at their tip. mpPtlngftLlrfr some action looking toward tn& imuroyement of the grounds in frjoPnciBg it in and grassing it. -This could b$4qe&ith itery little expense to the coniity and cbuld'be made one-ff the Smost-beautiful spots to be found anyjf here, and would ins'pire our citizens with a desire to" improve and beautify their 0wn.4prem.ises and. so prove of perni&nent benefit to our town and county.. . . - i r . i . . - We Lava beautiful homes in our little town: and they could be made more attractive by "the planting of, flowers, vines, ever greens and the grassing of lawns and yards with little or ..no ex pense to the owners. These are only suggestions; to our citizens, but we think them well worth consideration. . STATE AID TO COUNTY FAIRS. A bill is now pending in the legislature of this State relative to increased aid Jo county fairs. The State at present gives a small sum annually to Jihisipur poserbut the object of IBS' bill is to increase this Bum possibly in pioportion to the amount of premiums raised by the, respect ive Fair Associations or a stipu lated gift as may be deemed best. , If we are correctly informed, the State Fair is ' largely sup ported by State aid and while there is no special objection to this, still County Fairs are as important in th"ir respective lo calities and stimulate an interest Iif farmrilfeS&Ich the State Fair cannot possibiyreach and which can in no other way be obtained. It is the means of bringing all the people together and shows by displays in the various de partments what our. farmers are doing and to the world the - cli mate and spil adoptations to va rious products. It also gives farmers the opportunity of ex changing views and experiences and obtaining information along many lines by the experience of others. This is but a glance at the real benefits of these annual gather ings, nor must we overlook an other very important feature and that is the women and the home life upon the farm. In breads, cakes, preserves, jellies, fancy work, etc., they take aprominent part in the exhibit and their de partment is always a place of "joy and beauty forever." Some may object to the amusement features, but in moderation these are necessary to "drive dull care away," and which are enjoyed by the great majority of those who attend.; :j A County Fair is therefore one week of the year when farmers have their inning and the occasion is'- more -for ttieir pleasvire. profit and interest than any iber -class6f.-ieople. 'It ' is an evidence of public spiriVthal, ifi certainly commend able, with its ' ultimate object being to inspire more interest in farm life' and all that pertains thereto. . It is therefor but just, and right that the State encour age - this ;' particular , work by. making a liberal donation an nually to each and every County Fair r upon some satisfactory basis, or as first suggested, in proportion to the premiums raised by each Association. Union Republican. Report of 0 r ircczzror. -jr We regret very much to learn f the fire at Hot Springs last week which destroyed the reci tation or school room of Dorland Institute, the dormitory being saved only by the timely efforts of the good citizens.- The build ings were partly covered by in surance. , Dorland Institute has been a power for good in this county and we hope it may rise from -the ashes stronger and greater than before and see many more years of usefulness. ; , Superior Court Convenes Feb . , ruary 22." The calendar for the next term of Superior Court was made'out Tuesday. -. This term begins, Monday, February . 22nd, and will be a mixed term, the trial of criminal cases coming; first,., fpV lowed by the trial of civil cases. -" Judge Garland Ferguson will preside, . Vi,, :.;, ...4.-.: A. R. Post Accepts Invitation. The George W. Gahagan Post, No. 38, G. A. R., has accepted the invitation of the Sunday Schools of Marshall to bold- their annual Memorial exercises in Marshall May 29th, 1909. As the 30th comes on Sunday, the preceding day, the 29th, will be observed as Memorial Day. A program of exercises will be published later. S. M. Davis, Commander. A BEAUTIFUL THOUGHT. Compressed within this simple prayer are the things that make life worth living, all the things that rob death of its terrors. To go out with smiles is the happy consciousness oi a life well spent and with an un faltering trust in the beneficence of the unknown -beyond.-- May we all measure up to this simple yet high standard, when life's work is done and we wrap the drapery of our couch about - us as it were and lie down to pleas ant dreams.
