Munitions committee, said they

cruiser building program.
MELLON’S MONEY
The wealth of Andrew W. Mellon
in 1931 when he was Secretary of
the Treasury, exceeded $200,000,000,
according to the testimony of his
secretary before the Hoard of Tax
Appeals.
TO CHARITY
Mrs. Franklin 1). Roosevelt earned
$30,000 through radio talks from
May 14 and Dec. 31, 1934. The mon
ey was paid to a philantliropical so
ciety.
DEFICIT
As March opened the government
was $2,249,923,235 in the red with
four months more to go on the pres
ent fiscal year.
ARMED JAPS.
Roy W. Knabenshue, veteran bal
loonist. told a House committee that
there are 500,000 armed Japanese in
the country and Hawaii. Pressed he
admitted he had never seen one arm
ed but that the information was giv
en him by ‘‘friends.”
ESTIMATE
Work relief, at the “prevailing
wage rate,” would cost eight billion
dollars a year of 3,.">00,000 workers
were employed, according to the
National Industrial Conference
Board, an organization supported by
large corporations.
DRIVE FOR FUNDS
Anxious to clear up the party def
icit of around $500,000 the Demo
crats are about to stage a quiet cam
paign under the direction of W. For
bes Morgan, of Now York. Meat of
the huge deficit is a'' Inheritance
from the Ra'tJ.'c* ariouse regime and
toe campaign of 1928.
HURLEY’S ADVICE
Patrick J. Hurley, Secretary of
War in the Hoover Administration
urges Republicans to adopt a mid
dle ground course and to reject any
alliance with either extremist fac
tion of the Democratic group.
COUGHLIN’S ATTACK |
The Hev. Charles E. Conghlin, ra
dio priest, recently assailed the ad- ^
ministration, saying the cards had
been marker' for ‘high finance” and
‘big business.' This caused no reac
tion in the capitol although his al
•egation that the ‘ masses” have not
received a new deal through recent
legislation met agreement in some
quarters.
little progress
Last week Congress, for the most
part, continued to idle along with
out important results, although cer
| tain committees made some progress
on measures which will soon be ta
ken up.
DEMOCRATIC BLOC
Democrats to the number of about
100, said to be ‘dissatisfied” and or
ganized as a unit keep their plans
from the party’s regular leaders,
i They want more patronage, action
on the bonus and other measures
not on the administration program.
VIGOROUS
The vigorous attack .upon Senator
Long and Father Coughlin by Gen.
Hugh Johnson in New York last
week attracted much attention at
the capital. It was undoubtedly the
| worst word-scorching ever given the
I gentlemen.
WILLIAMS QUITS
Under attack by organized Labor
S. Clay Williams, chairman of the
National Recovery Hoard, resigned
last week. It is said he wished to
testify before the Congressional com
mittee as a private citizen rather
than as an official of the govern
ment in the NRA inquiry.
HOLMES' DEATH
The death of Oliver Wendell
Holmes, nearly 94 years of age,
brought sadness to the capitol,
where the jurist enjoyed the respect
of almost all who know him. -He
was twice wounded fn the Civil War
but lived to serve his country on
the Supreme Court for more than a
score of years. He was classed as a
Liberal.
: SAYS THE COURT
When the Supreme Court, in a
I recent case involving a railroad.
, wrote in its opinion that changing
I economic conditions must be taken
, into consideration by courts, it gave
some encouragement to the New
1 Dealers, whose legislation must be
j passed on by the Court.
Non-Acid Forming f
(Physiologically Neutral) -S
Plus! j
Swift offers farmers, in Red Steer, a Non-Acid Forming (physiolo- r
gicaliy neutral) fertilizer of exceptional crop producing ability! ThD S
special formula used is the result of years of re search and practical ^
crop tests. Red Steer protects crops from the dangers of root zone S
acid. This accounts for the fine crops being made with Red Steer.
In addition, Red Steer contains added calcium, magnesium apd g
other important plant foods not included in the usual plant food
guarantee, but often limiting factors in cotton soils.
