A VOICE PROM DOWN THE RIVER In the adjoin fog column we ere publishing an open letter from Derwood 1 leaver to D. K. McColl, Chairmen of the Board of Directors of the Marlboro Mills, Mtopoll S. C. Mr. Deavec, who is editor of the local newspaper, took an active part In the labor troubles which led to the contract which the Marlboro Mills signed with the C. 1. O. and which caused u? to write our, now famous, editorial entitled ''Sold ills Employees Down the River." Krom lifs'close contact with the employees of the Marlboro Mills.- Mr. Deaver has been Bible to observe the operation of the C. 1. O. contract, and being interested h> the welfare of ithe employee rather than C. I. O., has seen nothing which they have gained as the result of permitting thousands . of doltera to be taken frcnt their pay envelope* and delivered to union organizers. Mr. Deaver has witnessed the greed of the -racketeers in demanding the (Seduction of the 25 cents for weekly dues even when the employee could get only an hour's work and a pay of 27 cents. Where tin? C- I. O. have--secured t-onlitnk ta/without the check-off the mem iters oj tne navy iciu-cu iw pay uws gnu ..mrai \nv "my money me C. The check-off Is lh?? union orgnni*ers' methcd of forcing an employee to pay them It h?s no i-onneeiton with better wages or shorter hours nor does it benefit the ?-mpk>vee in any way.?Textile Ilulletbi. 1 AN OPEN LETTER TO D. K. McCOLL "k? Mr. t). K. Mot'oll, Treasurer Marlboro Mills, McColl, South Carolina. Dear 8ir: 1 have for some little tinfe been toying with the idea of writing thin letter. Yet. I have neglected doing so, chiefly 1 suppose because It is so hard Xor most of u? to admit that we have made a mistake. You may or may not remember that I had a small part in the organization cf tile Marlboro Mill's labor about a year ago.- I was Assistant Chairman c-f the Strike Committee and Chairman of Edu ' cational Committee ct the local T. W. O. C. Pit one believe me when I 6?y .that I was very sincere at that time in my efforts to assist in making this town a Mecca for the working man. I felt that, the Union was .the medium through which all this could be accomplished. But aim. 1 faileli to take? into consider UUJUH .iju.- seuuHiintig anu green uiui seems 10 oe one 01 me attributes of human nat ore It Is my opinion t;hat the T. W. O.'C. has fhlled to do the people. ' the town or the mills auy material gccJ. It pcems t.i me that all they have really accomplished h'OB been the. "Cheek Off" through which they hav.e manage t1 to pluck about four thousand ($4,000) dollars from the pay envelopes. The suite people that paid this money are now on relief. When the T. W. O. C. organizers were In full swing here, they made much fun of a few small pay envelopes that they managed to dig u>p (unskilled labor) at that time. But allow me to say right here that. B. U. (Before Union) 1 never estw an envelope for as little as two cents! The records In your office will show that on several occasions people worked as little as one hour in one week and! on a wage sctale of 27 cents per hour. On the demand of the C. I. O., and tn accord with the contract, your clerks removed 26 cents of the 27 for the current week's dues, leaving a balance of 2 cents. Let us Ipiagh that off if we can! Or is it a laughing matter? I can't think that K 1b. The T. W. O. C. h vi an opportunity to put themselves in solid with these people here when the mills shut down the film of the year. But dkl they do ft? No. Why? Because it is the purpose of people of tbeta* kind! to make money, not spend it. I have not seen g single labor organizer on the W. P. A. tout its ranks here are filled with labor that was beguiled by the leeches who propose to live off the efforts of honest labor. I don/t feel that the thinking men and women of McCoil will allow this situation to last. 1 want to thank yen for the things that yen htatve done for the people here in a quiet way. I have 1 earned! through & reliable source that you give $600 of your own money to assist the needy during .the stoppage of the mills. I know that you have given them rent and coal. 1 am now and, In this manner offering yon my since rest apologies for hawing for gotten my Americanism, for even so short & time, by assisting this band of "Gunless Robbers" in trying to tc'ar down American Institutions that It took our people centuries to build.
