Surplus Seeds Available
For Flood Areas
The State College Extension Service
has compiled a list of farmers
having surplus legume and small
grain seed available tor the drought
and flood stricken ureas of North
Carolina. A copy of this list has
been placed In the hands of every
county farm agent In the State.
John SY. *?jod uwwe ."sn-sis-tont - JEx- tension
director, acted piomptly
when it was evident that the dry
weather in July and the heavv raitis
and floods in August hud destroyed
thousands -of acres of food and feed
i tops. and many bushels of stored
seed. He culled upon Extension agents
to report on seed surpluses in
Their counties.
The survey showed t A at there are
iivuliable: l'J4.KiS5 bushels of rye
seed. til.'JJJ bushels of wheat. 18.
f>00 bushels of barley, 1,000 bushel*
of bye,. rto.ooo bushels of erithson
clover. 17.000 bushels of Italian rye
grass, and 5,000 bushels of vetch.
.. c farmers who have lost a part
or all of" their corn and hay crops
should immediately communicate
with their county farm agent and
learn the sources of this . surplus
seed,'* (ioodnian said. This is the
planting season for small grains and
winter grazing crops in most of the
State, i nd even In ureas where the
drought and floods did not cause
any damage, it is wise to have some
of these crops growing to protect
and enrich the soil during the winter
months.
The list of surplus seed sources
shows the following varietie and
amounts of oats available: Lee, 3,\
100 bitshelly; ' Fulgrain 71,385; Forward
13.000; Farrow No. yrt, 1,000;
Fuleaster 300; V. P. 1, No. 131. 1.oiiO;
("oker 32-1. 5.500; ("oker 33-47,
1,000; ('oker 33-50. 1.750; Norton
1.300; Fulghum, 13.000; and unnamed
varieties, 12.500 busliols.
Dairymen Told How To
Prevent Milk Fever
Vfiik fever annually causes the
loss 01 many goon liuiK cows, especially
in the herds or small dairymen.
soya John A. Arcy, (Extension
iluiry specials), of N. stale Col
lene. Such losses, are usually - Unnecessary.
he says, because milk fever
can be prevented easily by correct
feeding and management.
Using the methods employed in
one large high-producing Holstein
herd as an example, Mr. Arey said!
-that the following ration should be
used for cows after they are dried
off: Wheat bran 200 pounds ground
oats 100 pounds; ground corn, corn
meal or hominy 100 pounds; linseed
meal 100 pounds; and steamed bone
meal 15 pounds.
Mature cows should be fed from
10 to 12 pounds of this grain mixture
per day to within two weeks of
calving time, the dairy specialist ad
vised. Then the- following ration Is
used for the last two weeks, or to
within one or two days of calving;
Wheat bran, 100 pounds; ground
oats 100 pounds; and linseed meal
4j> pounds. The average amount of
this ration fed should be ablut 10
pounds daily. Exceedingly large
cows and heavy producers may be
fed as much as 15 pounds.
The N. C. Unemployment Fund
had a balance of $21,806,740.53 as o?"
July 1, 1940.
The N. C Unemployment Fund bal
ance on deposit In the U. S Treasury,
earned $929,459.78 In Interest'
up to July 1, 1940.
