Proverbs 3:29. That ice was something. Any number of ladies preparing Christmas dinners were caught short when the power failed. Some baked their biscuits in other ovens, and some just didn't have any. A number have said they're going to buy an old-fashioned wood range just for emergency use. Someone on the sfreet remarked that about half the Congressmen should follow Joe Ervin's example, not that they disliked the late Mr. Ervin but some of his cohorts. Housing Charlotte has been allocated 25b temporary housing units by the federal housing authority, and other towns and cities are also getting some. With the situation as desperate as It is here, a similar request should be forwarded. Erection of a few of these tempor"* ary, pre-fabrirated units would ease the local situation muehly, until lumber and other building materials be' come available. Under the present set-up, the only agency, official or otherwise, which Is equipped to handle this situation ii the city board. Sure, we need a Chamber o^ Commerce to be handling matters of this kind, but we don't have it. Until Kings Mountain has one, it is the duty of the city board to look after the public interest in this, as in other lines. City Manager Burdette, Mayor Thomson and tho councilmen should begin pulling the wires, before all the housing units are allotted. The new 01 Bill of Rights, just signed by the President, liberalise! ^ . very greatly the educational provl* Ions of the bill, and already a number of Kings Mountain veterans are thinking seriously of taking advantage of these provision* to equip then selves better for earning a living. Those who take advantage of it will not regret it. List Tour Taxes , Annually, citizens are required to list their property for taxes, and, annually, iuthorities have to appeal, wheedle, cajole and beg to get the job done. Usually, the job thai should require only a month takes twice the time. One reason is the procrastination of ^ the average eitisen. Few perhaps realise that the add1 ed time in finishing the job add* to the tax bill of the eountv and eitv. ?>, It's probably only a little matte* In the over-all bnngete of each, bat a few saving* in a few spots amount to consiierable sums. Vy It'a amusing how that outfit win ignore the price increase* in apparel, the wast amount of low quality-highpriced cigars on the market, and other high prices, still point to the price of sugar and exclaim: "Oh, what a great job we've done!" * The Kiwaaia ehsb report, pub 'shed in the Christmas edition, showed considerable activity during the past year. However, the key to the whole *lt nation is the strike picture. Unleee labor and management solv their difficulties, well be in ba< shape. Already the average eitixen ha been pinched by the lack of pre duetion, and the majority would lik to see the administration stake a fin hand and go about settling the site ation. They think that labor has hm its day long enough, and, though taw don't want a return to the 65-houi twelve-dollar week, they feel?rightl; ?that a 40-hour week at the prei ent wage rates is fair. Average reaction to the reeen headline that the National Labe Relations board is out of money wit 600 requests for the holding of strik votes is this? why should goverr ment pay for an election to se whether a group will strike for tw bucks more a day, when the wage I already at high levels. They thin it's stretching the public interei clause and opening the public pursi strings too far. By a firm policy which ~^11 resu] in cessation of strikes now joing o and a prevention of the threatens steel strike which is scheduled f< mid-January, President Truman ca go a long way toward showing tl nation, that he has the ability 1 serve as Chief Executive.
