There is little likelihood that even the Rhode Island Reds would veto his nomination. Few men have so strenuously championed the cause of the cackle.s during the past 12 months, nor has any man dlsployed the warmth I the human understanding, and the} down to earth approach of this ar- [ dent campaigner who has learned the Innermost secrets of his feathered friends. LALD, Thursday, Jan! 23,1947 by such knotty personnel problems as portal to portsi pay, Increased wa gea, and shorter hours, have never been up against an Jret* hen who refuses to lay her best when: She dines on old, stale mash; the floor of her house Is too bare; her bouse Is chilly, and she catches cold there is less than one nest for each Ave hens or her dfinking water is .too cold when she goes to work of a morning. And If there's anything that depress* - her, saps her vitality, and cuts down the number of thote, nice, fresh egg-shaped objects she tur-s out. it's the realization that there Just Isn't enough elbow room in the place!! This ground has been covered thorough ly by the hard-working professor, who leads you to believe that If the chicken's well-being Is. not taken Into consideration, the expression "As scarce as hen's teeth," may well become "As scarce as hen's e.;gs." I though I'd better take this up year." so I got him on the phone. "About these crov.dcd pulets," I says, "Just how much roorri do they need for utter happiness?" "Well. Cousin." he tells me. "you want to allow 20 lineal feet of feeding space for each 100 hens. Amerisan breeds need an average of 4 Kjuare feet of floor space, and Leghorn require 31-2. Comfortable quar ters are mighty Important during the winter. He also tells me to provide dry litter at all times, pay close attention to the ventilation, and to rap gently on the hen house door before mterihg so the birds won't get all flustered. Tar Heel chickens are etremely fortunate in being represented by a nan like the professor. His efforts vill not go un-noticed. Mecklenburg Club Fighting for Separation Charlotte. ? The Mecklenburg Sportsmen's Wildlife Club, through ts president, D. K. Sing of of Charotte, disclosed a few days ago that t Is squarely behind the North JnTollna Wildlife Federation in Its efforts to separate the division of Same and Inland Fisheries from the State Department of Conseryation ind Development. The Mecklenburg club la several 'ears old and came Into existence tefore the State Federation. Since ts inception one of Its top projects las been to obtain this dlvorcenent, which hunters and fishermen hroughout the State are convinced s necessary for proper conservation nd propagation. Two years ago when unsuccessul efforts were made in the Leglsature to set up a separate department Mecklenburg sportsmen were olldly behind the fight. The North * * ?tviiua ruuci auun was organized > uring the closing (Jays of that ses- | Ion and has been active ever since I rith its number one goal, the enact | lent of the divorce legislation. Mr. Sing, an ardent hunter and Ishermen, says the Mecklenburg or anlzation will work hand in hand rtth the State Federation during the glslature.
