Friday, August 20. 1948 ' - _________ Against Using Vinis Vaccines Raleigh. ? A warning against the promiscuous use of live vaccines for immunizing poultry against Newcastle disease os contained in a circular leter distributed to North Car . . olina chick hatcheries and feed deal ers by the Veterinary Division of the State Department of Agriculture. Dr L. J. Faulhaber, state veterinarian, says in .the leter that this vaccine is a new product still in the experimental stage. While it may of fer some definite advantages, he points out that it alsa has some disadvantages, chiefly the possibility of spreading Newcastle disease from recently vaccinated birds to susceptible birds in the vicinity. Other disadvantages cited include the statements that eggs of newly vaccinated layers carry the live virus for a period of time, and use of the vaccine sometimes results jn a slight mortality in. flocks to which it is administered. "Since the incidence of Newcastle disease in North Carolina is low," 1 0 nationally ad v er t i BABY DO KEF/ DEPfiHTM .' " ' ' ; IIV "- /.; '! In sueh cases permisi.sion to vaccinate must be obtained from the Veterinary Division of the State Department of Agriculture. At this time we feel that this product should be used under the supervision of the Department to avoid the j possible spread of the disease to! new premises with result ant dam-[ age to our poultry industry." A Correction i The Herald wishes to correct an inadvertent error in last week's edi- ' tion in an advertisement for Belk's Department Store. In the advertisement on felt-base rugs, the Herald published the price at $6.91 each, j The price should have read $6.31. The Herald regrets the error. The state of Wisconsin ranks first in the production of dairy eatle, milk products and hemp. At the same time, County Agen Ben Jenkins urged all farmers wh< intend to seed alfalfa and pastun this year to commence preparatioi of their seedbeds at this time. Last- year, according to the agen approximately 2,000 acres in Cleve land County were sown in alfalfa while an equivalent number wer seeded to pasture?both reaching ai acreage figure higher than eve before.
