The Motor Vehicle Department announced today that its Mechanical Inspection Division checked a total of 765,409 vehicles during 1948. A total of 1,258,994 inspections were required to cheCk these -vehi-' cles, since many had defects on the first visit to the lanes and had to re turn two or more times before they were approved. . The inspection report showed that 314,294 vehicles, or 41 percent, were approved on their first visit to the lanes, while the remaining 451,11a, or 53 percent, were rejected on their initial visit and had to have defects corrected before they received their blue sea'ls of Approval. A total of 991,042 defects were found on all vehicles checked. Of these, 20 per cent were for defective headlights, 24 percent fo other light ing defects, 22 percent for poor bra kes, 14 percent for steering defici encies, and the remaining 20 per cent were for all other defects, in cluding horn, mirror, windshield wi per, windshield, tires, and exhaust system. ?
